Assistantships
Teaching assistantships are available for qualified students in the Mathematics and Statistics graduate program. Applications should be sent before March 1 for the following academic year or by October 1 for Spring enrollment to receive first consideration. However, late applications will be considered until all positions are filled.
Regular teaching assistantships, available to students in the M.S. programs require teaching one 5-hour course or two three hour courses per semester and pay $14,400 spread over 9 months. Additional summer teaching is available with additional stipends of up to $3,500.
The GRE Suject test in Mathematics is recommended, but not required, for admission to the program. Students whose native language is not English must submit an official, acceptable TOEFL score. For the internet based test, a TOEFL score of 79 or above is acceptable.
To be considered for a teaching assistantship, applicants must have received (i) a score of 23 or higher on the speaking portion of the TOEFL(IBT), (ii) a score of 50 or above on the SPEAK test, or (iii) a score of 7.0 or higher on the speaking portion of the IELTS. It is impossible for us to waive this requirement or substitute another test of English speaking ability.
Limited number of assistantships available for students who have not passed the spoken English requirement. These assistants have non-teaching responsibilities for 20 hours per week and receive $6000 for the 9 month academic year.
Applications
Applications for Graduate Assistantships should be submitted directly to the Math/Stat Graduate Coordinator, either by filling out the on-line form or obtaining a paper form from the Graduate Coordinator. Only persons who have been admitted to either the PhD program in Applied Mathematics or the MS program in Mathematics will be considered for financial support.
Expenses
All graduate assistants qualify for resident tuition rates. There is also a 100 percent tuition reimbursement for teaching assistants who teach at least 5 hours per week, but not for assistants who grade papers. Assistants who grade papers qualify for resident tuition rates. For 2012-13, resident tuition is $225.30 per credit hour plus fees of $38.35 per credit hour. Teaching assistants take 9 credit hours per semester.
Room and board in the residence halls costs about $7000 per year. Information on room and board can be found at webs.wichita.edu/housing. Various living accommodations are available near the campus for both single and married students.
