CHIN 104. Introductory Chinese (3) - Introduces the Chinese language with emphasis on the fundamentals of phonetics, listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as gaining an understanding of Chinese culture. Intended for students with no previous formal instruction in Chinese.

     Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
     · Master the Chinese Pinyin System (Phonetics)

CHIN 105. Elementary Chinese I. (3) - Students continue learning the basic skills of listening to, speaking, reading and writing of Chinese for everyday communication, as well as gaining competence in Chinese culture. Prerequisite(s): CHIN 104 or departmental consent.

ELEMENTARY CHINESE SIMPLIFIED LEVEL 1/PART 2, 2nd EDITIONA. LEARNING OUTCOMES
     Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
     · Master the Chinese Pinyin System, focusing on tone combinations
     · Handle basic daily conversational topics with advanced sentence structures, including making requests, shopping, birthdays, hobbies and sports, symptoms of an illness, traveling, renting an apartment, weather, and expressing blessings and wishes, etc.
    · Recognize, read and write over 223 new Chinese characters, 428 characters (approximately 480 vocabulary words) in total including Level 1
   · Participate in conversations about traditional Chinese culture.
   · Use Chinese keyboard and software for communicative purposes.
   · Be prepared for higher level Chinese study.

CHIN 106. Elementary Chinese II (3) - Students further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Students learn more useful expressions and the advanced sentence structures necessary for use in day-to-day life. Different aspects of Chinese culture and society are introduced as well.
