Letter from the Chair

Dr. C. Brendan Clark

DR clark should be here

This past year we saw several new faces join the psychology department. I would like to welcome our new clinic director Bryce Summers as well as our two newest faculty members Nabiha Chaudhary and Renee Patrick and our six new graduate students Katrina Henley, McKenzie James, Areej Fatima, Anthony Hanna, Binh An Howard, and Hannah Piros to WSU. Among the many achievements of our department, I would like to highlight Jade Driggs (Halcomb Award), George Altman, Makenna Snodgrass, and Kathryn Fishwick (graduate student of the year award winners), and Sam Gregus Slade (PGSO Faculty of the Year). Numerous milestones were passed. Seven students completed internships, nine attended practicum placements, and five graduated with their Ph.D. The WSU psychology department continues to be a leader in research, teaching, and community service.

Dr. Chaudhary

Dr. Chaudhary

At the beginning of the fall semester in 2022, we welcomed Dr. Nabiha Chaudhary to the Community Program. Dr. Chaudhary is establishing the Contextualizing Psychological Processes for Social Change (CPPSC) Lab and utilizes community-engaged and qualitative methods to examine the ways underrepresented populations create change in their own lives and communities across different sociocultural contexts. Drawing from decolonial and liberation psychology, her work in the U.S. focuses on BIPOC activists, and immigrant and refugee women. Internationally, she works with human rights defenders to understand the psychological processes involved in creating social change in Pakistan. We are excited to see what Dr. Chaudhary and the CPPSC Lab accomplish.

We also bid farewell to Dr. Jennifer Demers, who accepted a position at the University of Vermont as the Director of the Preventing Interpersonal Violence via Outreach and Training (PIVOT) Peer Educators Program. We appreciated having Dr. Demers and wish her well in her new position.

Dr. Goodman Williams

Dr. Goodman-Williams

Community faculty members and students were busy during the 2022-2023 school year, accruing 14 publications and four conference presentations. In 2023, Dr. Rachael Goodman-Williams was awarded a grant ($411,943) from the Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women for her project titled “Understanding Survivors’ Experiences with Alternative Reporting Options after Sexual Assault and Evaluating the Impact of Anonymous Consultation Calls with Police.” She was also awarded a grant ($73,255) from the Department of Justice Bereau Assistance. Congratulations, Dr. Goodman-Williams- we look forward to seeing these projects take off!

The graduate students in the Community program were also active in the department and the local community. Kathryn Fishwick won the Pratt Award and was honored as the Community Psychology Student of the Year. In Fall 2023, Community graduate students Samantha Smith and Alex Wren worked tirelessly to brighten up the department with fun gatherings and improvements to the break room as the Vice President and President of the Psychology Graduate Student Organization. Thank you for your hard work and dedication! After a long campaign, Ngoc Vuong won a seat on the USD 259 Wichita Public School Board. Congratulations!

Dr. Summers

In the 2023 spring semester, we welcomed Dr. Bryce Summers as the new Clinic Director for the WSU Psychology Clinic. Dr. Summers previously worked as a clinical psychologist in the Veterans Affairs Healthcare System, providing therapy and psychological assessments for disability determinations. We’re glad to have you, Dr. Summers. We bid farewell to the former Clinic Director, Dr. Christy Marvin, who moved into her own private practice, Sunflower State Psychology. Thank you for your time and service, Dr. Marvin! In addition to these changes, the WSU Psychology Clinic just entered an exciting collaboration with Project Access and KU Medical Center Wichita to provide access to mental health care for those who have multiple barriers to accessing care. We are thankful for the opportunity to serve more members of our community this way.

M. Renee Patrick, WSU professor

Dr. Patrick

In Fall 2023, we welcomed Dr. M. Renee Patrick as a faculty member in the Clinical-Community program. Dr. Patrick was the Director of the Autism Center for Diagnosis and Treatment at Southeast Missouri State University for ten years prior to joining the department. In addition to working as a faculty member in the department, Dr. Patrick will be the Director of the Consortium for Adults with Autism and Related Disorders (CAARD), an interdisciplinary clinic we are establishing alongside the Evelyn Hendren Cassat Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic, the WSU Integrated Support and Empowerment (WISE) Clinic, and the Office of Student Accommodations & Testing (OSAT). We look forward to seeing the CAARD Clinic grow!

The Clinical program faculty and students were also hard at work, amassing 14 publications and 17 presentations during the school year. The Clinical graduate students were also active in the department and local community. During the summer of 2023, Clinical graduate students Sarah McGill, Jonathan Larson, Makenna Snodgrass, and Jesse Borosky were involved in administering an evidence-based intervention and/or conducting research with the University of Kansas BREATHE Program. Additionally, Sarah Smith and Makenna Snodgrass spearheaded and coordinated the addition of two murals in the department – one in the clinic waiting area and one in 407. Special thank you to Grace Duncan, who graciously designed the murals and led the painting process!
