"Tau Beta Sigma for Greater Bands"
On May 4, 1952, the "Band Aids" of the "Wheatshocker Band" became the Alpha Mu Chapter of Tau Beta Sigma with Mr. James Kerr, band director at that time, as the first sponsor. In 1953, the band received new uniforms and the sorority was given a room in Fiske Hall (the music building at that time). Sybil Ingle Snyder was elected national President at the 1961 National Convention, which was held at Wichita State University and hosted by Alpha Mu and Beta Tau (WSU's Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi).
The primary purpose of Alpha Mu chapter of Tau Beta Sigma is to serve the WSU Bands in whatever capacity possible. Along with Beta Tau chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, the sorority helps in the operation of Middle School Band Day in the fall, numerous band festivals, Jazz Fest each spring semeter, and helps sponsor guest artists and conductors, and hosts receptions after every band concert. Alpha Mu is aways creating new ways to serve the bands. Alpha Mu provides community services for the School of Music and the community, such as helping with Truck or Treat. By holding many joint social activities, Alpha Mu and Beta Tau are able to promote sisterhood and brotherhood between organizations.
Alpha Mu has also been prominent on the district level. Throughout our history, Alpha Mu has had many district officers to help promotoe WSU and our chapter to the Midwest District. In addition, Alpha Mu has won numerous awards for their skits, displays, spirit and scrapbooks.
The history of Alpha Mu is a proud one. It has been repeatedly recognized as being one of the top ten Tau Beta Sigma Chapters and recently chosen as a host of a Midwest District Retreat in 2001. In 2002, the Alpha Mu chapter marked its 50th anniversary. The celebration included the commissioning of a piece composed by Dr. Katherine Murdock, an esteemed member of the WSU music faculty at that time, The WSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble performed the piece at their concert in May of that year with Jenny Collins, a WSU graduate teaching assistant and an Alpha Mu member, as the conductor. Alpha Mu will always be an continuous spirit of sisterhood that challenges its members to even greater heights in the 21st century.
