Graduate Studies
The School of Music offers the Master of Music and the Master of Music Education degrees along with a certificates in Performance and Professional Studies in Music.
The Master of Music Education has concentrations in Elementary Music, Choral Music, Instrumental Music, Special Education, Voice, and Conducting. The Master of Music has concentrations in Performance, Opera Performance, Chamber Music, Theory/Composition, Conducting, Music History/Literature, Piano Accompanying and Piano Pedagogy.
In addition to advanced studies on his/her instrument, the student who chooses the applied music option will develop a refined knowledge of the literature composed for that instrument and will also learn the pedagogy that has been developed for that musical medium. Performing opportunities, both solo and collaborative, are an important component of the degree candidate's studies.
For the student pursuing the conducting option, the degree stresses challenging studies in conducting skills, repertoire and rehearsal techniques. The degree candidate will focus on his/her particular area of specialty and will have numerous opportunities to conduct appropriate choirs, wind bands, orchestras and string groups, and chamber ensembles.
For students pursuing the composition option, the focus will be on writing music in a 21st century style with a focus on large ensembles, advanced theoretical study, as well as opportunities for continued studies on your performing instrument.
Students in the MME program have opportunities to collaborate with urban, suburban and private schools while interacting with the largest public school district in the state. Faculty in the MME program are recognized leaders in the field of music education and will help students refine their teaching skills while they continue to develop as musicians. Along with core classes, the candidate has the option to select numerous elective courses which allow them to individualize their degree program.
The Masters programs in the School of Music are 32-36 hour degrees. In addition to applied lessons and courses in repertoire and pedagogy, each option includes courses in music research and bibliography, music theory and music history. Elective courses permit the student to explore additional interests. Students complete a final degree project or recital that is the creative component of the degree plan. A final oral examination is also part of the degree requirements.
