Speech and Language Activities for Adults 

There are many benefits of doing speech therapy exercises at home. More practice usually means faster improvement, and therapy at home has been shown to be effective. It may be beneficial to do speech therapy exercises during a time of day when you are energetic and have minimal distractions. If you find yourself getting frustrated while you’re practicing, stop and take a break. Try asking for help or picking an easier activity. 

  • Locate a picture from a magazine, newspaper, or personal photograph. Attempt to describe what the scene is depicting. Include as many adjectives and complete sentences as possible!
  • Attempt to name items in your environment. Remember, if the word doesn’t come easily -  use your word-finding strategies! Word finding strategies include: description, synonyms, antonyms, spelling, drawing, and taking a rest!
  • Find any item in your house (for example, an apple): Try to think of three other words/items that would fit in the category group (fruit) as apple!
  • Have a friend, caregiver, family member, or spouse read a loud a short story from a magazine, newspaper, or book. Attempt to retell the story to individual following completion.
  • Keep a journal of specific words you are having a difficult time saying. Practice each word ten times per day!
