Fun speech and language activities for kids

There are many speech and language activities parents can do with their children to supplement therapy sessions. Here are some ways to make speech therapy at home fun for your kids!

Young children ages 2-4

  • Read books to your child.
  • Sing songs with and to your child.
  • Blow bubbles together outside to increase language.
  • Hold object beside your face to have child request the object.
  • Give choices - "Do you want a cookie or chip?"
  • Playdoh - make and create together.
  • Talk to your child about what you are doing. ("Mommy is walking to the kitchen and opening the refrigerator to get some milk.")
  • During walks outside, talk to your child about what you see. ("The tree is big." "I see a bike." "We are walking really fast.," etc.)
  • Make a list of words that need to be worked on and talk about those words as you walk together.

Children ages 4-6

  • Read books to your child.
    • Have the child describe what is happening on each page.
    • Ask what, where questions about the book.
    • Have them retell the story.
  • Play language-based games like I spy, Guess Who, 20 Questions, Headbanz.
  • Play Simon Says to target following directions.
  • Look through books and magazines for pictures or words that have their speech sound.
  • Hunt for things around the house that have your child’s speech sound.
  • Outdoor chalk obstacle course for child: following directions, turn-taking, gross motor skills, fine motor skills (ask your child to draw the obstacle course with you).
