The Dorothy & Bill Cohen Honors College Weekly Update

Assume racism is everywhere, every day.

If you aren’t already assuming racism is everywhere, every day then start today. See how it feels to you. That may not be your first thought. You may not be comfortable with it, but learning starts with trying ideas that aren’t your first ideas.

We are all here to learn. Face the messy, difficult questions you may have. Take risks. If you want to be an ally, as I do, but, like me, don’t always know how, consider checking out some of the resources online such as the explanation from activist DeRay Mckesson available on ideas.ted.com or the guidelines from Paul Kivel on Racialequitytools.org.

As our students on Twitter and other social media platforms have reminded us, posting a quote or a black square isn’t enough to stop racism. Maybe it's a start. Remember and repeat the names of George Floyd, Sandra Bland, and too many others.

Take care of each other. I believe this is what striving for more meaningful work can help us to do.

"We must continue to remember how we have come to this place. But more importantly, we must ask ourselves as individuals, as a campus, and as a nation: How do we come together in one unified loud voice and with deliberate non-violent actions to put a stop to inequality and injustice where it takes place and to whomever it affects."

MGC to host Candlelight Vigil - June 5

The Multicultural Greek Council invites all to a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. tomorrow (Friday, June 5) in the MGC Quad (located in the RSC Courtyard off of the East Entrance).

This is a peaceful time to mourn the loss of Black individuals because of police brutality, and to rally together to support Black individuals. We strongly encourage physical distancing and the use of proper PPE. A limited number of candles will be provided.

We will feature four speakers, including three Wichita State students and one Wichita State staff member. Please contact mgc@wichita.edu for additional questions.
