Honors Hour: You as a Leader Next Week
Are you unsure if leadership is for you or have you ever wondered about your personal leadership style? Are you interesting in understanding how values inform your leadership preactice?
Join us on Tuesday, September 28, at 3:30 p.m. in RSC 240. Dr. Chelsea Redger-Marquardt will share about different leadership approaches and styles and explain how you are a leader! She is the Director of Honors Service-Learning and Leadership Academy.
Director of Diversity Initiatives Application Closing Soon
The Cohen Honors College Student Council aims to develop a strong sense of community and common identity among Honors students by providing opportunities and serving as a refuge to all students of the Honors College. The Council uses innovative approaches to identify and address the challenges and needs of all Honors students and serves as the voice of students through communication with the staff, faculty, and Dean of the Honors College. The Council meets Thursdays at 5 p.m.

The Cohen Honors College is seeking an Office Assistant who will staff the main reception desk and provide general office support. Office assistants are official greeters who help students, staff, and faculty use the resources of the Cohen Honors College and the Dean’s office. They assist with event planning, recruitment, and scheduling advising appointments as needed. The assistant must have strong oral and written communication skills, as well as, exercise discretionary judgement regarding student information and executive-level communication.

Get Involved with the First-Year Research Experience
The Cohen Honors College is excited to accept applications to participate in the First-Year Research Experience (FYRE) in STEM program. The mission of the FYRE program is to introduce research to first-year undergraduates in a practical and accessible way. Students selected for the FYRE program will be required to enroll in an introductory research seminar course that exposes them to research methods. Students are matched with research positions in WSU labs actively involved in scholarly STEM research. Learn more at wichita.edu/fyre. Interested in Going to Law School after 3 Years at Wichita State? Apply for LEAD!
Wichita State has entered an agreement with the University of Kansas School of Law to offer the Legal Education Accelerated Degree (LEAD) program, new in fall 2021. Wichita State students interested in the LEAD program will major in one of five liberal arts and sciences areas: criminal justice, English, history, philosophy, and political science. This strong liberal arts and sciences preparation will help students succeed at KU Law. LEAD students will complete three years of work at Wichita State in an approved major. After the first year of law school at KU, 29 hours will transfer back to Wichita State as general elective credits to complete the bachelor’s degree.

New Academic Service-Learning Experience: Bill's Trip
The Cohen Honors College is very excited to unveil a new academic service-learning experience, Bill's Trip! It is named in honor of Bill Cohen and stands for Building Investment in Lifelong Leadership & Service. Students will travel to Grand Canyon National Park in January to spend the week serving and learning about the National Parks. Prior to travel, students will explore resources focused on the National Park Service, Grand Canyon, stewardship, and servant leadership. Students have the option of taking the course as 1 credit hour or 3 credit hours. All student travel is funded through a generous gift in honor of Bill Cohen. Students will only be responsible for course tuition.

Lead For Tomorrow Leadership Academy

Building Better Relationships: Communication, Comprehension, Collaboration, and Connection
The Leadership Academy strives to be a curricular program that engages students in
contemporary research and scholarship based on an annual theme, question, or issue.
Students will participate as a cohort in an 8 week course, as well as, a Place as
Text travel experience and design thinking process (1 credit hour travel seminar)
culminating in pitches to the faculty thought leaders. Students will travel to Seattle, WA, in May. Students should look forward to neighborhood explorations, industry tours and panels,
and communication observations in settings such as Pike Place Market, sporting events,
coffee shops, and more. All student travel is funded through a generous gift from
Dorothy and Bill Cohen. Students will only be responsible for course tuition.

Applications Open for the First-Year Honors Advisory Board
The First-Year Honors Advisory Board (FHAB) allows first-year Honors students the opportunity to grow as leaders while advocating for their peers. The Cohen Honors College would like to encourage any first-year Honors student interested in serving on the board to apply.
Volunteer Opportunity: Habitat for Humanity
Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home. It believes affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities. Wichita State University has committed to supporting the building of a Habitat for Humanity house not far from campus.
The Honors College is delighted to sponsor a day of building. No experience is necessary. Volunteers will serve under the supervision of construction staff. The Honors College is looking for 15 volunteers on Friday, November 19, from 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. All volunteers will be given a Habitat for Humanity, All Campus Build t-shirt and a 30-minute lunch break.
