WSU hits all-time high in research rankings
Dr. Rick Muma, president
Wichita State University is soaring to new heights in the research realm. In January, the university moved to No. 2 on the national list of industry-funded engineering research and development, according to the latest data compiled by the National Science Foundation’s Higher Education Research and Development Survey.
In fiscal year 2022, Wichita State reported $261 million in R&D expenditures, a significant increase from $192 million in 2021. Of this total, industry-funded R&D expenditures reached an impressive $116.3 million, reflecting a substantial rise from $86 million in the previous year.
Wichita State has also climbed seven spots to No. 13 on the list of top universities in total engineering and research and development. Our engineering R&D expenditures for fiscal year 2022 totaled an impressive $226 million, showcasing our continued dedication to advancing knowledge and driving progress in the field.
These achievements are a testament to the dedicated students, faculty and staff who work doggedly in the labs, offices and classrooms across campus in the relentless pursuit of discovery.
It also speaks to our institution’s strategic plan, which underlines research and scholarship — with a particular emphasis on applied research, or research that addresses the challenges of the people and businesses we serve. This is an important distinction for Wichita State as an urban, public institution and one that’s fiercely dedicated to contributing to the prosperity of our community. We believe our research should connect with the community in a deep and meaningful way; and we work diligently to build a place where academia, business and industry collaborate to innovate solutions. For example …
- WSU engineering professor leads $2 million grant toward curbing nitrous oxide emissions
- NIAR expands military fleet sustainment capabilities
- Wichita State helps NASA evaluate possibilities for life on other planets
- History students hope to illuminate history of LGBTQ community in Wichita
- Wichita State, NASA lead research for improved in-space manufacturing plans
Looking ahead, with increasing contracts and awards from industry and federal agencies, we anticipate continued success and upward momentum in the NSF's survey. The forthcoming 2023 data, to be compiled by NSF and published later this year, holds even more promise for our university's continued rise in prominence and prestige.
As we celebrate these remarkable accomplishments, we remain dedicated to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, exploring new frontiers and making a lasting impact through our research endeavors. Together, we will continue to shape the future and build a brighter tomorrow.
Go Shockers!
Sincerely,
Dr. Rick Muma
President of Wichita State University
