Post-Completion Optional Practical Training (OPT) Tutorial
Filing Online through your USCIS Account
For detailed instructions on filing your I-765 OPT Application online, please use the guidebook linked below.
Proceed through the application answering the questions and uploading appropriate documents.
For current U.S. mailing address, you have the option of entering the OIE mailing address as shown below or if you would prefer you can use your own mailing address. OIE will hold all mail received for 60 days. After 60 days items that are not collected will be destroyed.
If you prefer to use your own address, be sure you will remain at that address for at least the next 3 months to ensure your documents can be delivered successfully. If your OPT card is lost in the mail, you will have to submit a new application and filing fee to USCIS to request a replacement. Once you receive your OPT card email a copy to iss@wichita.edu .
Wichita State University Mailing Address Option:
When prompted for Post-Completion CPT or OPT documentation, upload the Employment
Information printout from SEVIS that you received from ISS. If you have previously
had CPT authorization, you will also have an OPT-CPT Calculator to upload. If you
did any CPT or OPT under a different SEVIS ID you should upload all I-20s showing
CPT or OPT authorization and any relevant EADs.
If you would like an International Student Advisor to review your Form I-765 responsesprior to submitting the application, select “View draft snapshot” from the “Your application
summary” screen. Email the I-765 snapshot to iss@wichita.edu and an International Student Advisor will review the document for completeness, not accuracy.
ISS will not review other items you plan to upload as part of your OPT application.
Reviews are done by email only and should be completed within 3-5 business days. Reviews may take longer during prime application periods.
When you are ready to submit your application, complete the Applicant’s Statement and Applicant’s Declaration and Certification sections, pay the filing fee through Pay.gov, and submit your application. The OPT application must be filed within 30 days of the Designated School Official (DSO) entering the OPT recommendation into SEVIS.
If you plan to file your post-completion OPT application by sending paper documents to USCIS, you may use this guide (I-765 Completion Guide) for completing the Form I-765. Use the Form I-765 instructions as guidance on what documents to include with your paper application. As mentioned at the beginning of this tutorial, in-person OPT filing appointments are no longer offered.
