Transfer students who have completed 24 or more hours of approved college curricula at an accredited U.S. post-secondary institution since their high school graduation date, before starting classes at WSU as a degree-bound student, will have the option of following either:
A. The WSU General Education Program Requirements
OR
B. The Kansas Board of Regents (KBOR) Transfer and Articulation General Education Policy
A. WSU General Education Program requirements
- The WSU General Education Program requires 36 credit hours*:
- 12 hours of Foundation courses, including:
- 6 hours of English Composition (ENGL 100 or ENGL 101 and ENGL 102)
- 3 hours of Public Speaking (COMM 111)
- 3 hours of college-level Mathematics (Algebra) (MATH 111, MATH 112 or MATH 131*)
*MATH 111 or any math course that requires MATH 111 or MATH 112 as a prerequisite. MATH 131 does not fulfill the prerequisite
for any further math course. MATH 131 does not meet degree requirements in all colleges.
- 12 hours of Divisional Courses, including:
- 3 hours of a Fine Arts course
- 3 hours of a Humanities course
- 3 hours of a Social and Behavioral Sciences course
- 3 hours of a Mathematics & Natural Sciences course
- 12 hours of Additional Courses, including:
- Four additional general education courses from at least two of these divisions: Fine Arts/Humanities, Social/Behavioral Sciences, Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
- One course must be a first-year seminar. Starting Fall 2021, first-year students must take a First-Year Seminar (FYS) course during their first two semesters at WSU. The FYS counts as one of the four courses under 'Additional Requirements' and counts as one of the two different divisions in that category.
*At least 9 credit hours of the 36-credit-hour general education coursework must be
numbered 300 or above. One course in the major can count toward general education.
- General Education courses are WSU courses that are on the approved list (see the WSU Catalog) and those transfer courses identified in WSU’s database as meeting WSU General Education guidelines. Gen Ed transfer courses by Kansas institution can be accessed using the General Education Transfer Courses app.
- How a course transfers -- the WSU equivalency -- determines its division (Fine Arts/Humanities, Social & Behavioral Sciences, etc.), not the subject area or division at the sending institution.
- Completion of the University General Education requirements does not mean that specific college course requirements have been met, even though those courses at WSU might also be Gen Ed courses.
- Fine Arts Exception:
The Bachelor of Applied Arts (BAA) in media arts requires 30 credit hours of general education courses. In addition to the foundation courses, students in the BAA in media arts take one course each from humanities, social / behavioral science, and mathematics / natural sciences with an additional three courses selected from at least two divisions. Of the 30 general education credit hours, at least 6 credit hours must be numbered 300 or above. Fine arts courses do not fulfill general education requirements for the BAA in media arts.
