Incoming Freshmen Now Eligible for Extended Merit & Academic Awards

What’s the best way to spread some love to college-searching families as February approaches? Did you say scholarship dollars? Done. We’re thrilled to announce Wichita State University has adjusted the deadline for freshmen merit and academic scholarship consideration to Friday, March 1, 2024 for high school seniors.

For students who haven’t yet applied, dedicating just 10-15 minutes to complete our admission application and paying the application fee means they’ll be automatically considered for Wichita State’s largest comprehensive scholarship program. Take a peek at our chart to see what scholarships you'd qualify for based on your ACT/SAT scores and/or GPA. If you qualify, our Financial Aid team will soon have an official award letter on its way to you! No strings attached and it gives you plenty of time to decide by May 1, 2024 – the national college decision day – whether or not wearing black and yellow is destined to be part of your college future.

Wichita State University's Freshman Merit Scholarship chart: Amounts for Kansas residents and students from surrounding states who are eligible for tuition discounts are un-bolded. Amounts for out-of-state residents who are not eligible to receive tuition discounts based on their residency are in bold. The scholarship amount shown is the total over four years. More details are available via the Freshmen Scholarship page.

It’s also important to note this year our Office of Financial Aid worked some magic and is able to offer students an academic scholarship based on their unweighted high school GPA. That means if you haven’t had an opportunity to take the ACT or SAT, or perhaps didn’t score in a qualifying range for our freshmen merit scholarships, you’ve still got a great shot at an academic scholarship based on how you’ve been doing in school thus far. We know that standardized tests aren’t always a great measure of a student’s abilities, so we’re excited to extend an award for students who are excelling in the classroom already.

While our university has seen recent extraordinary growth – including the three largest freshmen classes in the university’s 128-year history occurring in the last three years alone – we’re excited to give even more students the opportunity to join Shocker Nation and give them a start with a four-year scholarship offer. Our niche is helping students pursue their academic goals and chase their professional dreams through applied learning experiences. Last year Shockers had more than 8,000 internships and on-campus positions with 600 employers, earning $30+ million in wages. If you’ve held off on applying for college because you’re not sure if you want to start your career first, we can help you do both by assisting with college funding along the way through the combined power of scholarships and paid applied learning.

By the way, our fall 2024 freshmen will be the first class of Shockers who get to enjoy the Shocker Success Center and the Shocker Career Accelerator’s new offices in the Marcus Welcome Center. Both of these new facilities alone represent more than $20 million in investments which are laser-focused on educational and career outcomes for our students.

There’s no reason to wait longer on that admission application! Students are receiving scholarship awards weekly so get started on this process now to claim your share.
