Lucas Hulett, a Charlotte, North Carolina native, is classically trained in trombone, euphonium, and tuba and maintains an active performing lifestyle. Since the beginning of his career, Lucas has appeared as a euphonium soloist with the University of North Carolina Charlotte Wind Ensemble and the Charlotte Civic Orchestra. As a jazz tenor and bass trombonist, he has shared the stage with notable artists including Dick Oatts, Brad Leali, Scott Wendholt, Mike Steinel, Jeff Coffin, Harold Danko, Terell Stafford, Jim Riggs, Cyrus Chestnut, and Paul McKee.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Lucas focused his efforts toward music education. By day, he worked as a traveling educator leading brass classes, giving pedagogical presentations, acting as wind instructor and brass caption head in the marching arena, and maintaining a private teaching studio. By night, Lucas performed primarily as a jazz/salsa trombonist, frequenting the Latin dance clubs and performing primarily with salsa band Orquesta Mayor. In conjunction with a yearly summer tour and regular party band schedule, they backed up major artists including N’Klabe, Maelo Ruiz, Jerry Rivera, Tito Puente Jr., Choco Orta, Yan Collazo, Ismael Miranda, Tito Nieves, Luis Enrique, and Luis Filepe Gonzalez.

Lucas served as a founding member of Buzz City Brass, a show band and mini corps for the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets, where he was the music director, arranger, and tubist. He also performs in and maintains a multi-location brass quintet, Intrepid Brass, in the greater Charlotte, North Carolina and Wichita, Kansas area, which performs for schools, private functions, and recitals.

Lucas can be heard playing trombone and bass trombone on a number of albums, including All kinds of Good, by Martin Musaubach (2017), which won an Indie Golden Melody Award for best jazz album of the year. Other album appearances include the debut for Orquesta Mayor (2018), the debut of Daydream (2018), the re-launch for Ryan Saranich’s Pocket Language (2016), the debut of the John Alexander Big Band (soon to be released posthumously), and numerous small projects out of “Tropic Culture Studios” in Cornelius, North Carolina.

Lucas holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a Master of Music from Wichita State University.
