Advice for future Shockers

Embrace all that is offered while you're on campus. Stretch yourself to get involved in a group or take a class that may be out of your comfort zone or usual interests. I was a communication major, but I joined the Biology Club because they had the best float trips on the weekends and breaks; went on a spring break trip with Student Government Association (SGA) to Washington, D.C.; and traveled with friends to away Shocker basketball games. Some of my favorite memories are from meeting other Shocker students in a class, in a student organization or on a student trip. I loved interacting with students, staff and faculty from different backgrounds and hometowns. It taught me so much about seeing different perspectives and working with other people.

Focus areas

Favorite hangout spot on campus

My favorite spot to hang out when I was a student was Ablah Library, our spacious four-story facility with endless study spaces and learning resources. Today, though, nothing beats the rowdy confines of Charles Koch Arena, where 10,500 screaming fans are cheering on the Shockers while booing the opposing team (and sometimes the referees, too).

Advice for future Shockers

Challenge yourself to start conversations with people you don't know who aren't like you, join a student organization that you know a lot about, plus one you know little about that just sounds like fun, and take your college classes by storm. College is an incredible journey but it's on you to make it an amazing, entertaining and successful ride.

Advice for future Shockers

My advice to Future Shockers is quite simple. Try new things and do not be afraid to fall. There will always be someone to help you back up, I promise. Challenge yourself, be creative, have fun and have grace for yourself and others. As humans, we spend more time considering if we will be good at something or if we will look foolish, than actually trying the thing we are considering. Be bold and do not restrict yourself to others' limitations.
