TRIO History and Impact

About TRIO

TRIO programs are federally funded initiatives designed to promote educational access and success for students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Established under the Higher Education Act, TRIO programs help students overcome barriers to higher education by providing academic support, financial guidance, and personal development opportunities.

Who TRIO Serves
These programs ensure that all students—regardless of background—have the resources and support needed to thrive in college and beyond. TRIO programs serve:
  • First-generation college students

  • Students from limited-income households

  • Students with documented disabilities

Wichita State University proudly hosts multiple TRIO programs, including Student Support Services (SSS) STEM, which focuses on helping STEM majors succeed academically, financially, and professionally.

TRIO History & Impact

A Legacy of Access and Opportunity

TRIO programs were created as part of the Higher Education Act of 1965 to ensure that students from disadvantaged backgrounds have equal access to higher education. For over 50 years, TRIO has helped millions of students overcome academic, financial, and social barriers to earn college degrees.

National Impact
  • More than 800,000 students are served by TRIO programs each year across the U.S.
  • TRIO students are twice as likely to stay in college compared to peers without similar support.
  • TRIO alumni include scientists, engineers, educators, and leaders making an impact worldwide.

At Wichita State University, TRIO continues this tradition by empowering students to achieve their academic and professional goals through Student Support Services STEM.
