Passage Scholars

Passage Scholars

The Passage Scholars program is designed to provide additional aid that will help students reduce the number of hours they work each semester and provide an opportunity to engage fully in a variety of on-campus activities and organizations.

This is a special award for at least ten first-generation students with financial need. In addition, recipients of this scholars program will be required to be actively engaged and participate in Passage 2 Success, a week-long retreat for incoming freshmen from diverse backgrounds to help in their transition to Wichita State University. Awards are dispersed in the amounts ranging from $2,000-$5,000 per academic year.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to compete, you must:

  • Be an admitted student of Wichita State University (otherwise, be a high school graduate and submit application materials to Wichita State University)
  • Submit the Free Application for Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA)
  • Students who are ineligible to complete a FAFSA will be contacted to provide a separate statement describing their financial need
  • Be a registered participant in Passage 2 Success, while actively participating and engaging in the program

How to Apply?

  • Complete the Passage Scholars application by Monday, July 31, 2023 on ScholarshipUniverse, when available
  • Register Freshman Orientation and pay the separate Orientation fee
  • Register for Passage 2 Success by Friday, June 2, 2023

Expectations

  1. Scholarship recipients will be expected to devote and record time each week for studying and tutoring. Students are advised to spend two to three (2-3) hours outside classwork per week for each unit of credit they carry, with eight to ten (8-10) hours of required structured tutoring.
  2. Recipients will be required to meet bi-weekly with an assigned mentor.
  3. Recipients will also be required to be actively involved in one on-campus student organization.
  4. Recipients must meet with Shocker Financial Wellness in the Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships to complete a financial plan by the end of September 2023.
  5. Renewable undergraduate scholarships are automatically considered for renewal so long as funds remain available and the student: retains a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above (or that required by a particular scholarship's criteria) and successfully completes a minimum of 30 credit hours per academic year.

From a Passage Scholar

One thing that I have learned so far from my college experience is that continuous work and dedication will open up doors and get you better outcomes in life.

Through my experience with Passage 2 Success, I was able to jumpstart my college career by meeting amazing students and staff. Being a scholar has been a blessing and my gratitude will proceed me beyond my years here as a Shocker. I know I will one day look back at this moment when the hard work and dedication pays off.
