Cross-Listing Courses in CIM
Cross-listed courses are defined as two or more active courses marked equivalent to each other in Banner. To be edited using a single curriculum change form in CIM, nearly all aspects of the courses must be the same – title, description, prerequisites, etc. If the departments do not agree on these common factors, each course will have to be maintained using a separate CIM form. Courses can be cross-listed in the schedule (taught together) and not be cross-listed in CIM.
Each cross-listed pair or group must have a primary course; this is normally the course subject within the department teaching the course.
The following describes the actions that would involve cross-listed courses and the steps for each within the CIM system. These apply to courses that are cross-listed in CIM.
Creating two (or more) new courses that will be cross-listed (a SINGLE CIM form):
- Click Propose New Course and enter the primary course information in the Subject and Course Number fields.
- Locate the Cross-Listed field further down in the form and Add the secondary course(s) information using the drop-down menus.
- Complete all required fields on the proposal.
- Click Start Workflow.
- Once approved, both/all courses are created in CIM and Banner with identical information.
- For step-by-step instructions, see Creating a New Course and a New Cross-Listed Course.
Creating two (or more) new courses that will be cross-listed in schedule but are not
identical:
- Requires two CIM forms.
- Click Propose New Course for each course separately.
- Note in the Describe/Justify box of each proposal that the courses are equivalent and will be taught together but won’t use single CIM form.
- Complete all required fields on each proposal.
- Click Start Workflow on each.
Creating a new course(s) to cross-list with existing course:
- Edit existing course (it will be primary to start). Do not propose a new course.
- In the proposal of the existing course, locate the Cross-List field and Add the information of the new course number(s) using the drop-down menus.
- If new course is to be the primary, click the Make Primary link in the Cross-List area once the new course is visible there.
- Complete all required fields.
- Click Start Workflow.
- For step-by-step instructions, see Creating a New Cross-listed Course from an Existing Course.
Removing the cross-list and inactivating one of the courses:
- Search for one of the cross-listed courses and select Edit.
- Ensure that the course to be inactivated is NOT the primary course; if necessary, make it the non-primary course by toggling Make Primary in the Cross-List area.
- Once the course to be inactivated is listed in the Cross-List field, click the Remove link (this will inactivate the non-primary course).
- Complete all required fields.
- Click Start Workflow.
- For step-by-step instructions, see Inactivating the Primary Cross-Listed Course or Inactivating a Secondary Cross-Listed Course.
Inactivating both/all courses in a cross-list pair/group:
- Search for primary course.
- Select red Inactivate button.
- Provide effective term and justification.
- Both/all courses will be inactivated.
Contact Sally Fiscus in the Registrar’s Office To:
- Cross-list two or more courses that already exist on the course file.
- Remove cross-listing and keep both courses active,.
REMEMBER:
Cross-list in CIM means equivalent in Banner and all (with few exceptions) information about the two courses is the same – one CIM form.
Courses can be equivalent in Banner but not cross-listed in CIM…in this case, each course would have its own CIM form.
