Frequently Asked Questions about Student Employee Evalations

For Student Employees

What is a performance evaluation and why do I have to do one?

A performance evaluation is a process where your supervisor or manager assesses your job performance based on agreed-upon standards or expectations. The purpose is to provide feedback on your strengths, areas for improvement, and overall performance. It's essential to conduct performance evaluations to identify areas where you can improve, set goals for future development, and recognize your accomplishments.

What is ShockerGROW?

ShockerGROW is an assessment method that uses brief, structured conversations between student employees and their supervisors to help students connect the skills and knowledge they are gaiing in the classroom with the work they are doing, and vica versa. It helps us focus on making student employment a "high-impact activity"—meaning it required students to reflect on their learning and connect with it beyond the classroom.

I don't think my supervisor was fair on my evaluation. What should I do?

If you feel that your supervisor was not fair during your evaluation, you should start by calmly discussing your concerns with your supervisor. Share specific examples of where you believe their evaluation was unfair and try to understand their perspective. If you are still not satisfied, you can speak with your human resources representative for guidance on the next steps to take.

I'm having an issue with my supervisor but don't know who to talk to.

If you have an issue with your supervisor, you should first try to resolve the issue directly with them. If that doesn't work, speak to someone in a higher position, such as their supervisor or your human resources representative. It's essential to address any issues promptly to prevent them from escalating.

Evaluations are scary or make me uncomfortable. How do I know if I've done well?
Performance evaluations can be nerve-wracking, but it's essential to remember that they're a two-way conversation. Come prepared with specific examples of your work and accomplishments to show that you've met or exceeded expectations. If you're unsure how you're doing, ask for feedback throughout the year so that you're not surprised during the evaluation. Finally, don't be afraid to ask questions and seek guidance on how you can improve your performance.
