About the Spirit Competition

Homecoming Week at Wichita State is a time to embrace what it means to be a Shocker! The spirit competition represents camaraderie, community and a sense of belonging. Three divisions have been established to provide opportunities for all students to engage in the weeks festivities.

IMPORTANT DATES (2021 Homecoming)

 

Information Meetings

Friday, October 2 | 11 a.m.

Location: RSC 265

Wednesday, October 6 | 7 p.m.

Location: Hubbard Hall 228

This meeting will provide information for groups of students interested in creating a team for the Spirit Competition. The Homecoming committee will discuss the events, competitions, rules, and regulations for participating.

Team Registration Deadline

Thursday, October 14 | midnight

 

Team Captain Meeting

Wednesday, October 20 | 6 p.m. | Hubbard Hall 228

This meeting is required for participation in the Spirit Competition.

DIVISIONS

The two divisions are - the Greek Life Division, the Wheat Division, along with Individual Competition. All division teams must have a designated captain to serve as the main point of contact between their team and the Homecoming Committee. Individuals may only serve as captains on one team amongst all the divisions.

GREEK LIFE DIVISION

  • A team registered in the Greek Life Division is to be made up of 1 or more Greek Life Chapter(s) to form a team.
  • Team members are made up of currently enrolled Wichita State students and a team must have a minimum of 10 members and may have a maximum of 35.
  • Teams in the Greek Life Division will compete against each other for 1st place and will awarded at Shocktoberfest following the Parade.
  • Teams must participate in 8 out ot 10 of the activities, including the golf cart parade, to be eligible for 1st place. Additional participation points are awarded for attendance at special events. 
  • Individuals competing in the Greek Life Division are permitted to compete in the Wheat Division & Individual Competition but are only permitted to serve on one team per activity. (ie – you cannot serve on two teams at the bowling tourney)
  • First place will be awarded to the team that accrues the most Spirit points over the course of the week’s competitions. These are allocated based on number of events that each group participates in.

WHEAT DIVISION

  • A team registered in the Wheat Division is made up of members of 1 student organization or affiliated group of students (I.e. - shared leadership role group, a class, cohort, res hall floor) to form a team.
  • Team members are made up of currently enrolled Wichita State students and a team must have a minimum of 10 members and may have a maximum of 35.
  • Teams in the Wheat Division will compete for the Spirit Trophy to be awarded at Shocktoberfest following the Parade.
  • Teams must participate in 8 out of 10 activities of their choice to be eligible for the Spirit Trophy. Additional participation points are awarded for attendance at special events.
  • Individuals competing in the Wheat Division will not be allowed to also complete the in the Individual Competitions for the same event (ie – you cannot serve on two teams at the bowling tourney).
  • The Spirit Trophy will be awarded to the team that accrues the most Spirit points over the course of the week’s competitions. These are allocated based on participation and placement in events.

INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION PARTICIPANTS

  • Anyone is welcome to participate in Homecoming events and competitions. Individual teams can be created by groups of friends, roommates, an intramural team, a class or even a leadership position.
  • Each team must simply have the minimum number of participants on their team as is required by the rules of the competition and pay the entry fee.
  • Participants in this division do not have to be members of a student organization.
  • Anyone competing in an individual competition will not be allowed to also compete in the Greek Life or Wheat Division for the same event (ie – you cannot serve on two teams at the bowling tourney).
  • Individual Competition Participants will compete for 1st place in each individual event and will be awarded at the conclusion of their event. The winners of each event will be announced at Shocktoberfest, no awards will be presented.

CAPTAIN

  • The Captain of a division team serves as a liaison between the Homecoming Committee and members of the team they represent.
  • The Captain is responsible for communicating all rules, policies and updates concerning changes in schedules.
  • The Captain is responsible for ensuring all event or competition fees are paid on behalf of the team.
  • The Captain is responsible for obtaining any waivers, forms or documentation needed for an event.
  • The Captain will be the point of contact in the event of an incident, infraction and/or breach of the student code of conduct made by one or the whole of the team.

POINTS

Teams can earn points through participating in competitions, as well as earning participation points for attending special events. There is a total of 320 points that can be awarded. 

Competitions

Trunk or Treat Car Decorating Competition, Megaphone Decorating Competition, Chalking Competition, Bowling Tournament, Big Pink Volleyball, Homecoming Parade

1st Place -- 20 points

2nd Place -- 15 points

3rd Place -- 10 points

5 participation points to groups who do not place. 

Participation

Participation points are awarded based on a percentage of your teams roster that attends/participates in the activities listed below.

Pumpkin Run -- Up to 10 points for participation

Trunk or Treat -- 5 points for hosting a car; 1 point per volunteer, up to 10 volunteers

Wu’s Birthday Bash -- Up to 10 points for attendance

Scavenger Hunt -- 5 points per completed task,  10 tasks total

Casino Night -- 10 points for hosting a table, up to 10 points for attendance

All-Star Flag Football Games -- Up to 10 points for attendance
