Thursdays with 3S: Beyond the Theoretical

Corey Hubbard is a junior at Wichita State studying Mechanical Engineering, and he’s taking his career journey to new heights as a Certification Engineering Intern at 3S.

Originally from the Wichita area, Hubbard attended Northeast Magnet, where he was a part of the engineering STEM program, leading him to WSU. Hubbard is an active member of the Formula SAE team (sponsored by the Society of Automotive Engineers), and he started his internship journey in the fall with 3S.

3S is an Organization Designation Authorization, certifying aircraft modifications for the Federal Aviation Administration.

“I help draft documents for certifications, research documents and find historical information for aircraft,” Hubbard says.

Hubbard says communication is one of the mainstays throughout his internship. He attends meetings and even presents reports to the rest of the team. He ties classroom work into real projects, turning his theoretical lessons into practical applications in his internship.

“At 3S, I have worked on various projects on a wide range of aircraft. I was recently tasked with identifying the various iterations of a lighting system for an aircraft,” Hubbard says. “During this project, I reviewed historical and current engineering documents, and I was able to see how the aviation industry has operated and developed over time.”

Originally, Hubbard was unsure of what to do with his degree, but he found an interest in aviation certification through his internship, and he wants to stay in the industry.

Hubbard recommends that other students looking for internships should utilize the resources WSU provides. He attended career fairs and resume workshops, which were critical in securing his internship.
