Marc Dotson currently works as Site Coordinator for the Shocker Store located at the
National Center for Aviation Training. As a senior studying Human Resource Management,
he contacted the Career Development Center after learning of the opportunity to receive
credit for working in his field of study.
Dotson’s job duties include many aspects of human resource management, including involvement
with hiring and training student workers, daily interaction with customers, supply
chain and inventory management, and employee review processes.
“I’ve had management level positions before, but the difference is, this one has given
me formal training on how to conduct interviews, perform employee evaluations, and
more,” he says. “The methods used here are exactly like what is being taught in class."
While daily use of these learned skills has helped Dotson grow professionally and
academically, his teachers, applied learning experience and mentors at the Shocker
Store have also inspired him to be the best at what he does.
“My supervisor has been a terrific example of what it means to work with people and
help to develop them,” he gushed. “Dr. Yoon and Dr. Markova are both great at what
they do and are more than willing to help give advice.”
While gaining experience in one’s field of study is instrumental to success, Dotson
also recommends getting involved in related organizations such as SHRM, Society for
Human Resource Management.
“It is worth it to join SHRM and try out for the annual SHRM games. There are incredible
networking chances with both!”
