The Presidential Medallion

The presidential medallion is worn by the president of Wichita State University on signiﬁcant or official ceremonial occasions as the symbolic manifestation of his role and responsibility as the chief officer of the university. The official seal of Wichita State University anchors the ceremonial anaglyph and is encircled by two hyperbolic forms designed to complement the university mace. The presidential medallion is suspended from black silk trimmed with gold.

The University Mace

As the official symbol of the university’s authority and power, the mace is carried by selected college faculty in the academic procession. The mace was commissioned in 1978 by Paul J. Magelli, former dean of Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, as a memorial to his twin brother, Peter M. Magelli, and presented for the first time at the 1980 commencement.

Designed by artist Jonathan Graham Bonner of Providence, Rhode Island, the mace is executed primarily in stainless steel, gold and silver. The head of the mace is a gilt frame with 22 stainless steel spikes. The points are sterling silver. A silver ball engraved with the three seals of Wichita State University—Fairmount College, the Municipal University of Wichita and Wichita State University—is suspended in the frame by two springs. The shaft is a stainless steel spring, and the handle is a gilt ball set with nine hematites.

The University Seal

The seal of Wichita State University incorporates many images. A farmer and an Indian, representing Kansas’ rural background and Native American heritage, are looking up at seven stars above a lamp of learning.

The university’s name arcs above these images. Below them is a sunflower flanked by wheat, again signifying Kansas, and a laurel, a symbol of learning. Three significant dates of the university’s past also are included: 1895, Fairmount College founding; 1926, University of Wichita reorganization date; and 1964, the date the university entered the Kansas Regents’ system.

Commencement Notes

Honorary Degrees

An honorary degree is an exceptional honor bestowed upon a person without fulfllment of the usual requirements. Honorary degrees are conferred only upon persons of notable intellectual, scholarly, professional, creative achievement or service to humanity. A candidate for an honorary degree must be deeply grounded in a career of scholarship, research, creative activity, service to humanity or other profession consistent with the endeavors of Wichita State University.

This program is not an official list of confrmed graduates for the 2023 Fall Commencement.

Students listed in this commencement program are candidates for degrees in Fall 2023. Students’ names are listed in this program as they appear on the graduation list provided by the Office of the Registrar. Students’ names are read during the university commencement ceremony as they appear in the graduation information approved by the graduates.

Graduation with Honors

Degrees are conferred with distinction upon undergraduate students who have shown exceptional scholarship in both their cumulative and WSU grade point averages. Students with grade point averages of 3.90 out of a possible 4.00 receive the summa cum laude award; those with averages of 3.550 to 3.899 receive the magna cum laude; and those with averages of 3.250 to 3.549 receive the cum laude.

Candidates for degrees and for university honors for Fall 2023 have been tentatively determined on the basis of work completed through Spring 2023.

In addition to university honors, departmental honors are awarded to students who have met the appropriate requirements. Wichita State does not confer honors upon students completing degrees in the Graduate School.

Academic Dress

Today’s academic dress evolved from caps and gowns worn in medieval universities. The academic gown is the basic garment and by tradition is black for all degrees and ranks.

The square caps or mortarboards are part of the prescribed academic dress. Students receiving graduate degrees wear hoods lined with silk in the ofcial color of the institution conferring the degree and bordered in the color representing the discipline of learning. The color of the tassel designates the student’s degree and may vary from what is found on the hood.

Commencement Guests

Jon Rolph, Kansas Board of Regents

Jon Rolph is President and CEO of Thrive Restaurant Group, which owns and operates over 150 restaurants including Applebee’s, Carlos O’Kelly’s, HomeGrown, Modern Market and BakeSale. Thrive is the nation’s second-largest Applebee’s franchisee. The restaurants are in 15 states across the Midwest, Carolinas and Appalachia.

Jon was a two-time Student Body President at Baylor University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2001. After graduating, Jon worked with college student leaders as an intern for the National Student Leadership Forum in Washington, D.C. He returned to Kansas in 2002 to work in the family-owned businesses started by his father and his uncle, David, and Darrel Rolph.

Jon has held several key positions in the company, including restaurant-level operations, V.P. of Administration and Marketing, and COO of Carlos O’Kelly’s, eventually succeeding his father as President of Sasnak Management, which was rebranded in early 2019 to Thrive Restaurant Group.

Jon has served on the boards of several local and national organizations, including the Wichita Children’s Home, United Way of the Plains, the Wichita Metro Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of Visioneering Wichita, the Center for Combating Human Trafficking, and the Wichita Metro YMCA boards. His current board memberships and affiliations include Vice-Chairman of the Greater Wichita Partnership, Board of Directors of INTRUST Bank, Chairman Centralized Supply Chain Services (CSCS), Chairman of the Applebee’s Franchise Business Council, Baylor Collaborative on Hunger and Poverty, and serves as Chairman of the Kansas Board of Regents.

Jon and his wife, Lauren, are both 5th-generation Kansans. They have been married for over 16 years and have six children, ages two to thirteen.

Gene and Yolanda Camarena, Honorary Degree Recipients

Gene Camarena is President/CEO of La Raza Pizza, Inc. His business interests include Pizza Hut restaurants, Marriott hotels, banking, and real estate development. In the past 10 years these business holdings have been recognized as being in the top 150 largest Hispanic owned businesses in the country. Gene has served 3 terms as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Pizza Hut Franchise Association (IPHFHA), which represents the interest of the more than 5,500 Pizza Hut franchise locations in the U.S. and was recently inducted into the Pizza Hut Franchisee Hall of Fame. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Hispanic Scholarship Fund which is the largest philanthropic organization in the country for providing scholarships to Hispanic college and graduate students. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund provides more than $30 million in scholarships annually. Gene also Chairs the Board of Directors for Kansas Big Brothers Big Sisters, Empower, and the Pizza Hut Foundation. He also serves on the Board of Directors for Work Torch, Hispanics in Real Estate, United Way of the Plains and The University of Kansas Endowment Board of Trustees.

Gene was born and raised in Salina, KS. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and Business Administration from the University of Kansas and a master’s degree in business administration from Harvard University.

Yolanda Camarena has been a dedicated leader advocating for social justice and equity in education over the years. Her areas of service are education, community development, and philanthropy. As a first-generation college student in the 70’s, she experienced the many obstacles Latino students faced trying to get a college education then and continues today. Because of that experience she and her husband Gene currently support various scholarship programs that will assist students fulfill their goals of getting a post-secondary degree. Her career background was in Higher Education Administration. Her work experience has been in enrollment management, student success, student services and education community centers.

Ms. Camarena holds a bachelor’s degree in education from Wichita State University, a master’s in public administration from the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University and was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letter from Newman University in 2015. During her time at Harvard, she and several of the Latino graduate students founded the Journal of Hispanic Policy. The Journal continues to be a formidable source for Hispanic policy research at the Kennedy School of Government. She currently serves on the national board of the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund (MALDEF), board of the Kansas Hispanic Education and Development Foundation(KHEDF), board of Empower Evergreen, Board of Trustees for Newman University, board of the Phillips Fundamental Learning Center, chair of the Schools and Scholarship Committee of Harvard College, member of Hispanic Scholarship Fund Advisory Council, member of the National Advisory Council for Wichita State University, and serves on various city and community organizations. She is featured in the nationally recognized book, Latina Leadership Lessons: Fifty Latinas Speak.

She has two daughters, Gena and Marisa, and her husband is Gene Camarena. She believes that education is one of the most important determinants of success for a person and “It is our responsibility as members of a community to help improve the lives of all its citizens, and in doing so we improve our own lives.”
