Classroom Technology Training Schedule for spring 2020
Classrooms across campus are equipped with uniform technology and media equipment. Access is available to faculty and staff with consistent keys for most classrooms that are issued during a short training session. We encourage you to bring your personal laptop to test in the room during training. If there are additional needs or questions, please call 978-3588.
Faculty are encouraged to verify that their assigned rooms have the technology they need prior to the start of the semester.

Reminder: RIA proposal requests due Friday, Jan. 17
The Regional Institute on Aging (RIA) at Wichita State University is pleased to announce a new funding opportunity for interdisciplinary faculty research that addresses issues related to well-being in older adults. This funding opportunity is supported by a gift from the estate of Evelyn Cassat. Funding will be provided for three interdisciplinary research projects at WSU that contribute to knowledge and practice related to well-being in older adults.
The maximum funding amount for each of the three proposals is $25,000 for a 12-month period. Proposals may be either for foundational research or applied research (see definition below). Foundational and applied research projects that actively involve faculty members at WSU from at least two distinct disciplines and more than one college will be given priority; however, sole researcher projects will also be considered.
Applied research projects that provide evidence of real or potential impact for improving or sustaining older adults’ access to and inclusion in services or activities that foster physical, cognitive, and social well-being will be given preference.
All projects must also include an impact statement describing specifically how the project will benefit the quality of life for older adults in the community and provide practical guidelines for possible implementation. Projects must also include a plan for obtaining future funding from external sources to continue the research.
The application due date is Friday, Jan. 17.

Enroll in a Badge course today!
Enrollment is now open for the spring semester! You can enroll from now until April 13. Courses start Tuesday, Jan. 21. All coursework must be completed by May 7.
Please note: Scholarships are not available for spring 2020.
Badges are academic short courses of one credit hour or less that are designed for working, non-degree seeking professionals. They are online and self-paced. Badges allow students to demonstrate to employers their knowledge, skills and competencies in a subject area.
Students who successfully complete a badge will receive a digital recognition of their accomplishment that they can share on social media and link to a digital resume.

Wednesday, Jan. 15 is "Instructor Training Day" at the RSC. Choose from many topics and times by signing up through myTraining. Topics include:
* Applying the QM Rubric (APPQMR)
* Image Manipulation for Classroom Use
* Creating Accessible Video (covers adding video to classes in different platforms)
* Accessibility Exceptions Procedures (counts as your mandatory accessibility training for 2019-20 academic year)
*Aligning Blackboard Content to your Face-to-Face Class
Trainings are offered all day, so choose one or several topics based upon your interest and time availability. Please bring your laptop or other device to the trainings you choose.

Attend Best Practices in Accessibility and Accommodations with Eric M. Wilson, associate educator in the Elliott School of Communication and Trends in Higher Education Fellow, and John Jones, director of the WSU Media Resources Center, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 15, in 142 RSC.

Wilson and Jones will look at how WSU compares to peer institutions in meeting accessibility and accommodation needs. Discuss our biggest challenges as a university and as individual faculty members. On March 13-14, 2020, Student Affairs and Educational Psychology will host a graduate weekend for current and prospective students to learn about and interview for graduate assistant positions within Student Affairs / Student Services.
As we prepare for this weekend, we would like to gauge which departments may have assistantships open for FY21, and would like to participate in this weekend. Blackboard and Accessibility Open Lab time
Instructional Design and the MRC Web Team will host a Blackboard and Accessibility lab in the morning and afternoon of Wednesday, Jan. 15, in 261 RSC. The lab will open at 9 a.m. and run to noon, and reopen at 1 p.m. and continue to 3:45 pm.
Bring Blackboard and general accessibility questions any time throughout the day. If you have questions about PDF accessibility for your Wichita.edu webpages, help will be available during the 1-3:45 p.m. session. This is a come-and-go lab, and is open to all WSU instructors and staff; there is no need to sign up. Anyone who comes to the lab will receive a fresh dry erase marker and mini dry eraser.

Wichita State University honors the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
Wichita State University will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a series of events on campus and throughout Wichita.
This celebration begins Friday, Jan. 17 and will last until Wednesday, Jan. 22 through citywide collaboration with organizations like Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., The Kansas African American Museum, and the Greater Wichita Ministerial League.
On Saturday, Jan. 18, the university will participate in the citywide Martin Luther King Parade, which begins at 10 a.m. The celebration continues on Monday, Jan. 20. Wichita State will cosponsor with the Greater Wichita Ministerial League to host the 2020 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Worship Celebration at noon in the Eugene M. Hughes Metropolitan Complex.
Later that week, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion will host its 12th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, in the Rhatigan Student Center Shirley Beggs Ballroom.
A majority of events are free and open to the public. A compiled guide of celebrations for this year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day can be accessed at wichita.edu/MLK.

Voice faculty member Cristina Castaldi, soprano, and her pianist-husband, Gene Philley, will perform in recital at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 26, in Wiedemann Recital Hall.
The program will feature the works of Erich Korngold, Claude Debussy and Richard Strauss. Admission is free.

“Pets of Student Affairs” is an exhibit presented by Student Involvement. Located in the Looking Glass, “Pets of Student Affairs” will showcase some of the animal friends we call family.

‘Visual Culture’ by Julian Kincaid in the Cadman Art Gallery - Main Space
“Visual Culture” is an art exhibit presented by student artist Julian Kincaid. His work will be on display from today (Monday, Jan. 13) to Friday, Jan. 24. This show is about the most common types of art we encounter, such as advertisements, movies, games, clothes, and packaging. This interactive walk-through will subject viewers to the many different types of marketing that surround us.
Join the artist for his reception starting at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23, at the Cadman Art Gallery, located on the first floor of the Rhatigan Student Center.
