School of Computing Academic Integrity Policy

The School of Computing (SoC) is dedicated to providing a fair academic environment to all its students and, to this end, actively upholds the Wichita State University Policies and Procedures on Student Academic Integrity. All students registered in any course offered by the school are expected to be familiar with the WSU Academic Integrity Policy, Procedures, Flow Chart, Incident Reporting, and Appeal Process, available at this webpage.

A. Sanctions for Academic Misconduct

As stated in the university policy, when a faculty member has a reasonable good faith belief that a student has committed academic misconduct, the faculty member may impose academic sanctions, and has sole discretion on deciding the sanction severity, e.g. assignment resubmission, assignment grade reduction, course grade reduction, course failure, etc.

If the faculty member determines academic sanctions are warranted, regardless of severity, the faculty member must perform the following:

  1. Report the infraction to the WSU Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards via the online reporting form, also available at the above webpage. (The option at the bottom of the reporting form, “Email me a copy of this report”, must be checked prior to submission of the form.)
  2. Forward the resulting email to the SoC Director.

The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards may place additional sanctions, namely educational sanctions (such as knowledge attainment, self-reflection, or restorative activities) and/or disciplinary sanctions (such as probation, suspension, or expulsion).

B. Student Right to Appeal

As per university policy, if a student disagrees with any sanction imposed by a faculty member or the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, the student may complete an Appeal Request on the above webpage. It is recommended that the student first discuss the matter with the SoC Director.

C. Grading/GTA Eligibility

Any student involved in an incident, in which a sanction was imposed and eventually carried out, either due to lack of an appeal or in spite of an unsuccessful appeal, will not be eligible for a SoC grading or graduate teaching assistantship position for a period of two semesters from the beginning of any sanction.

D. Academic Dismissal

A SoC student involved in two incidents, in which a sanction was imposed and eventually carried out, either due to lack of an appeal or in spite of an unsuccessful appeal, may be recommended by the school for dismissal from their SoC program of study. Such a recommendation, along with any relevant evidence, will be communicated by the school to The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards.
