Oliver and Betty Elliott
The Elliott School of Communication (ESC) was named in honor of WSU alums Oliver and Betty Elliott, who committed a large gift to WSU primarily to endow the school.
Oliver Elliott graduated from what was then called Wichita University in 1942 with a degree in economics. He served as the editor-in-chief of The Sunflower in 1940 and was awarded the Outstanding Student Journalist award.
After graduation, Elliott worked for Cessna Aircraft, where he met Betty Thomas. The two married in 1943. Oliver's career led him to eventually become president and CEO of National-Spencer, a manufacturing and sales company. He credited his experience in journalism for his success.
In 1988, Oliver and Betty made a large contribution to the university to establish
the Elliott School of Communication. Spearheaded by the Elliott’s generous support,
the school was able to attract other private and public funds to build and equip a
new building, Elliott Hall, in 1995.
