ESC master's program alumna knew from experience as a GTA she wanted to teach
Elliott School alumna and current faculty member Sandy Sipes knew she wanted to be an instructor at Wichita State from her early years as a graduate teaching assistant.
”I loved being a GTA and having that kinship with the other GTA’s," Sipes said. "It was a very healthy, welcoming, helpful environment for me."
After finishing a graduate degree with the Elliott School, Sipes immediately started teaching classes as a full-time lecturer. But, Sipes did not pursue a Ph.D.
"I love teaching much more than researching," Sipes said. "That's why I made the decision not to pursue a terminal degree."
Despite the credentials a Ph.D. brings, students at the ESC note Sipes as being one of their favorite instructors.
"I took three classes with Sandy," said Ryan Dame, ESC alumnus. "She always brought so much life and enthusiasm into the classroom."
Sipes currently teaches business and professional speaking and introduction to human communication classes at the Elliott School.
"Professors and instructors like Dr. Pat Dooley and Connie Morris demonstrated to me their passion for teaching," Sipes said. "This is something I try to emulate every day."
For Sipes, graduate school was the last step as a student. Although it was a challenge at times, she sees the rewards of her degree daily.
"It's normal to feel overwhelmed in graduate school," Sipes said. "You can eat the elephant, one bite at a time. Tackle graduate school with the same mantra."
