MCLL offers Graduate Teaching Assistantships in Spanish and also Graduate Reseach Assistantship positions for translation and interpretation duties.
Graduate Teaching Assistantship
The Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) are responsible for teaching three beginning level Spanish courses per academic year (direct instruction).
The benefits that come with a full-time GTA position include:
• Up to 100% tuition waiver.
• Two-semester stipend is no less than $9,000
• A 10% discount on books purchased from the Campus Bookstore;
• Coverage by the Worker’s Compensation Act;
• A discounted rate on state health insurance for full-time GTAs (health insurance
is mandatory for international students).
Non-native speakers of English must attain a minimum score of 23 on the speaking portion of the iBT. Please check Graduate School website for directions about English Proficiency.
Mandatory training and supervision will be provided by MCLL faculty and by Graduate School.

Graduate Research Assistantship
The Graduate Teaching Assistants (GRAs) are responsible for translation and interpretation duties in Spanish for WSU's Elliott School of Communications.
The benefits that come with a full-time GRA position include:
• Two-semester stipend is no less than $9,000x
• Additional compesation for tuition
• A 10% discount on books purchased from the Campus Bookstore;
• Coverage by the Worker’s Compensation Act;
• A discounted rate on state health insurance for full-time GTAs (health insurance
is mandatory for international students).
Mandatory training and supervision will be provided by MCLL faculty and by Graduate School.

Eligibility
Graduate students admitted to a degree in either full standing or conditional status are eligible for graduate teaching or research assistantship positions.
Application for a Graduate Teaching or Research Assistantship
Students wishing to be considered for assistantships must submit the following material directly to the Spanish Graduate Coordinator:
- A completed form of application for Graduate Assistantship or Fellowship;
- A 1-2 page essay, written in Spanish, on how the Assistantship will further your
educational and professional goals;
- 2 letters of recommendation (can be sent directly from the recommender through
email of the Spanish Graduate Coordinator);
- A curriculum vitae or resume.
Once all these documents are received, you will be interviewed by the Spanish Graduate Coordinator.
Candidates for the Research Assistanship will pass a short exam on translation with the position supervisor.
Deadlines
If you are interested in these positions we recommend applying as soon as possible after confirmation of admission to the program.
Our tentative deadlines are April 1 (for Fall semester) and November 1 (for Spring semester). Applications received after these deadlines are considered at the discretion of the department. Please remember that we need to process all the paperwork in time for the semester to start.
