What is Major for a Day?

This day is designed to give you an opportunity to experience life as a WSU student in the School of Performing Arts. The day may include:

  • An informational session
  • A chance to meet the faculty, staff, & professionals in the School of Performing Arts, Advising, & Financial Aid
  • Lunch ($20 registration fee covers the cost of a student lunch)
  • An opportunity to attend a class of your choice in Acting, Dance, Design & Technical Theatre, or Musical Theatre 
  • Performing Arts and campus tour (available by request)
  • Wrap-up to ask your questions
  • A comp ticket to one School of Performing Arts production

Here's what you need to know if you're attending

Location

Marcus Welcome Center, Wichita State University main campus, Wichita, KS 67260

Parking

You’ll start the day at Marcus Welcome Center. There is parking in front of the building.

At different points in the day, you may also be at Heskett Center Dance Studios The nearest lots are 10 and 15. Be aware that there’s a lot of construction in lot 15.  

There are also a few options for Wilner Auditorium. The best lot is behind Wilner in lot 20 or across the street in lot 25.

Please note, parking is free 3 times per semester for visitors, EXCEPT in the parking garage. Be aware of any parking spots/lots with a red Reserved sign. There is no free visitor parking in reserved spots or lots. Here's more information about Visitor Parking at WSU.

Attire

Please wear clothing that’s comfortable, easy to move in, & no flip-flops.

Overview of School and Opportunities

Students attend a class with current students that gives a greater understanding of performing arts 

Parents/guests attend presentations from Admissions, Financial Aid, & Advising
11:45 am Lunch
1-2:30 pm

All students will attend a class in the area of interest (Acting, Dance, Design & Technical Theatre, or Musical Theatre) 

  • Acting: They Fight!
    • This will be an introductory experience for students interested in physical storytelling for violent scenarios. Unarmed combat will be our main focus, but other weapons (swords, knifes, stage firearms) will be discussed with an emphasis on safety.
    • Location: Wilner Stage
  • Dance: Company Class - Contemporary Technique
    • Friday Dance Major Technique Class taught by rotating faculty and guest artists
    • Dancers should wear leotards/tights/leggings, and a fitted top; no shorts; dancers will be barefoot and can bring socks for warm-up
    • Location: Heskett Center Dance Studios, Room 144B
  • Design & Technical Theater: Behind the Scenes Tour 
    • A walking tour of all the design & technical spaces
    • Discussion about all the applied learning opportunities
    • Location: Wilner Auditorium, Room 203
  • Musical Theatre: Telling the Story: Musical Theatre Song Coaching
    •  Students should prepare a 32-bar song. (This can be one of the songs you are using to audition if you've signed up for that)
    • Bring sheet music double sided in a 3-ring binder
    • An accompanist will be provided
    • Location: Heskett Center Dance Studios, Room 144A

3:00 pm Campus Tours from Wilner (option A)
4:00 pm Campus Tours from Heskett (option B)
