Program Overview
- Location: Asunción, Paraguay
- Tentative Dates: May 26-June 6, 2025 (2 weeks)
- Open to any student at WSU
- Students will have the opportunity to learn from locals and learn more about Paraguayan culture and South America in general through observing in different nonprofits and schools. Students will observe in multiple nonprofits and schools throughout the program.
- Nonprofit focus areas - Public Health Management, Sustainable Economy Development, Microbusiness, Education Management (Early Childhood, Elementary, High school & University), Social Entrepreneurship and Arts/Music
Who can participate?
- Anyone (all majors, honors or non-honors students, undergraduate or graduate)
- Targeted at the following students:
- Honors students
- Graduate students
- Students studying Spanish (*Students do not need to speak any Spanish to participate in this program. We will have interpreters, however, for those who are studying Spanish this will be an excellent way to get full immersion in the language.)
- Engineering students to fulfill Engineering+ requirement
- International Studies/International Business majors (cultural/language experience or study abroad requirement for IB majors)
- Anyone who has an interest in learning about South America
- Anyone interested in a service-learning experience
Summer Class Information
- Open to all undergraduate and graduate students at WSU
- Undergraduate students: HNRS 398O (1 or 3 credit hours)
- Graduate students: LEAD 751B Global Leadership (3 credit hours)
- WSU Instructors: Dr. Mark Vermillion and Ann Burger
- Honors students: Earn credit towards your honors requirements with 3 credit hour option
- Pay regular WSU tuition fees for summer 2025 rate
Cultural Benefits and Activities
- Learn from locals
- Visit sites including museums and other places of interest
- Learn about other cultures
- Experience multiple nonprofits and schools in Paraguay
- International service learning in nonprofits and schools in Paraguay (observe and learn from their staff)

Program Costs
Program Costs:
- Program Fee of approximately $900 (paid to WSU):
- In-country transportation
- Housing (homestay)
- Most meals
- Placement in nonprofits
- Cultural/sightseeing activities
- Additional Costs (not included in program fee) $1,900:
- Roundtrip flight from Wichita and airline baggage fees
- Health Insurance
- Extra meals not provided by host family
- Personal expenses
- Cost of regular WSU tuition and fees at summer 2025 rate (1 or 3 credit hours)
- $130 WSU Study Abroad application and administrative fees

Flights and Housing
Flights:
- Students will be responsible for purchasing their own roundtrip flight, which provides the student flexibility on when they would like to arrive/depart Paraguay in the case they would like to travel to other cities or countries before or after the program
- Students will have the option to travel with the professor, or you can purchase with other students to travel together
- Fly in and out of Asunción, Paraguay (ASU airport code)
- Most flights from Wichita will have 1 layover in the U.S. (typically Houston, Atlanta or Dallas) and then, 1 layover in Latin America (typically Panama City, Panama, Santiago, Chile, or São Paulo, Brazil)
Housing:
- Students will stay with a host family in Asunción
- Each host family generally has at least 1 English speaker, and many have children that have studied in the U.S.
- Host families will provide most meals and much of the transportation to/from activities

Complete payment of $130 WSU Study Abroad application and administrative fees (charged to WSU student account) – once your application has been submitted you will receive instructions on completing these payments
