Getting Started in F-1 Status Tutorial

Status Violations

  • How do they happen?

The most common reason for status violations is students not extending their I-20 program end date before it expires or students dropping below a full course of study in each fall and spring semester.

  • Why should you care?

An F-1 student who fails to follow Department of Homeland Security (DHS) / Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) regulations is considered to be out of status. Falling out of status will result in termination of the student’s SEVIS record. Students who fall out of status are not eligible for any F-1 student benefits such as on-campus employment or practical training, and will not be able to obtain or renew their driver’s license. Immediate action should be taken to re-establish status.

  • What if you didn't know?

It is your responsibility to understand the requirements of your status. At times, you may receive reminder/warning emails from iss@wichita.edu. This is one reason it is in your best interest to check your @shockers.wichita.edu email regularly.
