Session 1: Basics of SBIR/STTR for the SBDC newbies, optional for more seasoned counselors who want a refresher

Session 2: Major changes in SBIR/STTR. What has happened recently, what is on the horizon, especially as it affects who might be an appropriate applicant and how SBDC counselors might help and advise

Session 3: Phase I Proposal prep. Walk through a process that SBDC counselors might advise their clients to use, then talk about what counselors could do in terms of reviewing drafts, and what common mistakes to be looking for

Session 4: Address cost proposals and government accounting. This is a major problem area with SBIR/STTR proposals/projects and seems like a natural area for SBDC counselors to help. Talk about the basics, then talk about problem areas and warning signs for counselors to look for

Session 5: Explore questions of individual counselors or help them consult with their SBIR/STTR clients.

Jim Greenwood

With his wife Gail, Jim formed Greenwood Consulting Group, Inc. (GCGI) in 1996 after many years of operating small consulting, training, and data processing businesses under a host of other names. Jim started his first consulting business while still a graduate student at Harvard University. GCGI has extensive experience in working with small and startup businesses. As demonstrated in other parts of this website, two areas in which they have significant expertise in developing and managing small business incubators and assisting small firms in competing for part of the $2 billion plus Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs. They also have managed an SBDC, in which they counseled and trained hundreds of prospective entrepreneurs and small business owners and managers. Jim and Gail have worked with several federal laboratories in their technology transfer programs, particularly as those efforts apply to small business and federal lab employees seeking to spin off new firms around technology. They have also worked on a variety of other interesting projects ranging from analyzing the economic impacts of a college on its host region and preparing a handbook for small towns impacted by large chain stores like Wal-Mart.
