Student of the Year
2024 Application
The University Awards: Student of the Year recognizes distinguished students in each classification that demonstrate academic, involvement, service, scholarship, and leadership excellence on campus and beyond! Each year, only a handful of students are selected as finalists for each award, with one student being recognized as the Student of the Year for each category.
All applications open on Wednesday, January 24, 2024 and close Friday, February 23, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. Late applications will not be accepted.
All award categories will be scored through several processes, which include accuracy and completeness of the online application, resume, letter of recommendation (submitted by the author of the letter), academic strength, and essay responses in the application.
Note: This is an invite-only awards process. Students who met the eligibility requirements for each award process were sent an email on January 24, 2024. If you did not receive an email inviting you to apply for an award and believe you are eligible, please email seal@wichita.edu.
Listed below are the descriptions and requirements for each award category:
Each year, only ten students are selected to receive the Senior Honor. This is the highest honor awarded to WSU students who demonstrate outstanding scholarship, leadership, involvement at WSU, and service to WSU and the surrounding community.
The Senior Honors/Undergraduate Student of the Year will have an additional round for students who are recommended to move further in the process, which includes an in-person interview between Monday, March 18 – Friday, March 22, 2024. After the interview round, finalists will be chosen for these awards. Finalists will have a final round which involves a 20-minute presentation between April 8 – 9, 2024. More information, such as times and locations for theses dates, will be shared with applicants who move onto these rounds.
The top ten finalists will be named the 2024 Senior Honors, and will each receive a Wheat Shock Leadership Society stole, the official Senior Honors lapel pin, a $500 scholarship each, eligibility of additional Senior Honors need-based scholarships selected by the Committee. One of the ten will be selected as the Undergraduate Student of the Year and will receive an additional $1500 scholarship ($2000 total for winner).
Eligibility
Must be an undergraduate student, in good standing, with a 2.75 GPA or higher, and
currently enrolled in at least six credit hours at Wichita State University. Must
have completed at least 90 credit hours with a minimum of 30 hours being completed
at Wichita State University. Must intend to graduate with their first Bachelor’s
Degree on or before December 2024. In other words, December 2023, May 2024, and December
2024 graduating seniors are eligible to receive this distinction.
Each year, only five graduate students are selected as finalists for this award, who demonstrate outstanding scholarship, leadership, involvement at WSU, and service to WSU and the surrounding community. The top five Finalists will receive a $500 scholarship each, as well as a medal and the Graduate Student of the Year will receive a medal to wear at commencement. The Graduate Student of the Year will receive an additional $1500 scholarship ($2000 total for winner).
The WSU Graduate Student of the Year category will have an additional round for students who are recommended to move further in the process, which includes an in-person interview between Monday, March 18 – Friday, March 22, 2024. After the interview round, finalists will be chosen for these awards. Finalists will have a final round which involves a 20-minute presentation between April 8 – 9, 2024. More information, such as times and locations for theses dates, will be shared with applicants who move onto these rounds.
Eligibility: Must be a graduate student, in good standing, with a 2.75 GPA or higher, currently enrolled in at least six credit hours at Wichita State University.
Each year, only five junior students are selected as finalists for this award, who demonstrate outstanding scholarship, leadership, involvement at WSU, and service to WSU and the surrounding community. The top five finalists will receive a $500 scholarship each, and the Junior of the Year will receive an additional $500 ($1000 total for winner).
Eligibility: Must be an undergraduate student, in good standing, with a 2.75 GPA or higher, and currently enrolled in at least six credit hours at Wichita State University. Must have completed at least 60 to 89 credit hours with a minimum of 20 hours being completed at Wichita State University.
Each year, only five sophomore students are selected as finalists for this award, who demonstrate outstanding scholarship, leadership, involvement at WSU, and service to WSU and the surrounding community. The top five finalists will receive a $500 scholarship each, and the Sophomore of the Year will receive an additional $500 ($1000 total for winner).
Eligibility: Must be an undergraduate student, in good standing, with a 2.75 GPA or higher, and currently enrolled in at least six credit hours at Wichita State University. Must have completed at least 30 to 59 credit hours with a minimum of 15 hours being completed at Wichita State University.
Each year, only five freshman students are selected as finalists for this award, who demonstrate outstanding scholarship, leadership, involvement at WSU, and service to WSU and the surrounding community. The top five finalists will receive a $500 scholarship each, and the Freshman of the Year will receive an additional $500 ($1000 total for winner).
Eligibility: Must be an undergraduate student, in good standing, with a 2.75 GPA or higher, and currently enrolled in at least six credit hours at Wichita State University. Must have completed less than 30 credit hours with a minimum of six hours being completed at Wichita State University.
