At Wichita State University, we employ students in many different positions both on and off campus to provide training, knowledge, skill development and experience to accelerate students on their career path.

Available On-Campus Positions 

Another way to pursue an applied learning position is to fill out the Shockers on Deck interest form. Shockers on Deck is a talent pool of students interested in paid applied learning opportunities with local industry and Wichita State campus employer partners. The pool is used by our talent & sourcing team to fill open positions. (Participating in Shockers on Deck doesn’t guarantee a position.)

Sample Positions include: 


Arts (Marketing, Graphic Design, Communication, Videography, and more)
Strategic Communications, Shock Starter (Student Run Ad Agency), The Sunflower Newspaper, Media Resource Center, and individual departments employ creative students assisting with various marketing initiatives and projects.

Aviation, Manufacturing, Composites
Various labs with the National Institute for Aviation Research are employing students who work with their hands and tools to tear down military and commercial aircraft, digitally scan in parts, evaluate wear-and-tear.  Other students assist with lightning strike, microwave radiation, ballistic, stress, impact and other forms of testing on composite materials and other parts/components.

Business & Operations
Many areas across WSU employ students who support day-to-day operations.  Building Managers in the Rhatigan Student Center work together to set up event spaces.  Other students great customers, answer phones, and perform other duties in a office setting.

Design/Structures
Various labs across campus hire and train students in modeling software, and put them to work creating 3D replicas of aircraft and other vehicles called “Digital Twins.”  These digital twins can be modified, tested, and even crashed in digital environments. 

Health Services & Laboratory Sciences
The Molecular Diagnostic Lab, Biological Sciences Department, and other labs have students gaining experience in real world lab settings, being trained in cleanroom procedures, supporting lab technicians in pathogen testing, and more.

IT, Software, Networking, & Technical Support
WSU ITS, Ennovar, the Cyber Security & Forensic Research Group are hiring and training students through customer facing experiences.

Law Enforcement, Civil Services, and Social Services
The WSU Office of Counseling & Prevention Services, the Law Enforcement Training Center, as well as our Gateway to IP program (perfect for aspiring law students), all employ students supporting their missions.

Robotics & Automation
Students working in Robotics & Automation are solving industry problems, gaining experience     with cutting edge manufacturing robots, and learning skills that they can apply in an industry 4.0, Smart Factory of the future.
