About National Pan-Hellenic Council

The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated (NPHC) is the governing body of nine historically African American Greek letter organizations. Wichita State University’s NPHC is the governing body to eight of the nine historically African American Greek letter organizations. WSU’s NPHC serves to foster brotherhood and sisterhood in the pursuit of social change through the development of social program that would create positive and inclusive change for the surrounding community and society as a whole. WSU’s NPHC is part of a larger community that is also referred to as the Divine Nine, that serves as the umbrella for the nine historically African American Greek letter organizations.

How to Join

Prior to Intake:

Prior to the membership intake process, do research of all the organizations to gain information and insight of each of the Divine Nine fraternities and sororities on WSU’s campus.
Register and attend at least one of the National Pan-Hellenic Council informational sessions. Fall 2024 informational sessions will be held September 3rd and September 4th. Keep preference or interested organization to yourself and not too obvious until the time has come for the intake process (may also be known as rush).

Member Intake

Fraternities and Sororities in NPHC take on new members to their organization through a process called Member Intake. This is an individualized process that differs from chapter to chapter. Each group sets the semester and dates that they wish to bring in a new line of pledges (members).This process generally begins with an interest meeting followed by a period of membership education. The intake process typically ends with initiation or a formal crossing into membership and may include a new member presentation or reveal to show the new members to the campus community and their family and friends.

Joining a chapter in NPHC is a lifelong commitment to a far-reaching national/international organization that is both exciting and rewarding. The brotherhood/sisterhood, dedication to community service and cultural awareness and education that you share as a member of a NPHC organization is unlike any other.

Questions

Am I eligible to join NPHC?

To be eligible to join an NPHc fraternity or sorority, you must be enrolled at Wichita State University and have a cumulative GPA about 2.5 (some chapters may have higher GPA requirements to join their organizations). Additionally some chapters may require a certain amount of college credit hours or volunteer hour requirements prior to joining.

What does NPHC mean?

NPHC, also known as National Pan-Hellenic Council, is the governing body of the eight NPHC fraternities and sororities we have at Wichita State University. The council manages and leads the NPHC community, as well as the Fraternity and Sorority Life community on campus.

What are the benefits of NPHC membership?

NPHC being a lifelong membership and commitment with undergraduate and graduate chapters creates community and helps their members excel in academics, leadership, and service. Each organization has philanthropies that they donate both their time and money to. Since NPHC fraternities and sororities are inter/national organizations, the networking opportunities provide members with amazing personal and career opportunities.

How much does it cost to be in an NPHC chapter?

Each chapter has their own set of dues. The money is divided between the local and inter/national organization. The first semester will be more expensive, due to one-time fees related to starting your membership. After the first semester, the dues reduce by a significant amount.

Do I have to live at the chapter facility?

No. Fraternities and sororities in NPHC do not have facilities maintained by the chapter. However, oftentime members will live together to create connection and community.

Learn the Basics

Each organization in the NPHC celebrates a different and unique purpose within their organization, with that being said to research each organization. Look for those that encompass a part of your own identity or align with a community that you strongly support. Try to find a fraternity or sorority that reflects the values, goals and objectives that are most fitting with your own. Visit their national and local websites to find publications that discuss the origin and basic tenants of the organization.

Attend Events

Look for flyers,Instagram invitations and other publicity about programs and functions that will be hosted by the chapters that you are interested in. Your attendance will show your interest in the organization, give you a better understanding of their programs and make connections with the members. Introduce Yourself

Once you have identified the organization that you are interested in joining, let them know that you are interested in pledging. Choosing the organization that you would like to join is a serious decision and one that can be greatly impacted by your interactions and conversations with the member.

Do Your Homework

Chapters seek new members that have something positive to offer. Show that you have a genuine appreciation and interest in the organization, have researched its history, exemplify its standards, have leadership and community service experience, and can contribute to making the chapter stronger.

Attend a NPHC Event

Each semester, NPHC hosts the NPHC Informational and NPHC Week. Attend both NPHC and interested chapter events to learn about each oorganization and talk to their members.
