I want to be a teacher. What courses should I take first?
Whether you are going into Elementary or Secondary Education, you have 42 hours of General Education course work that needs to be completed. You must complete the basic skills of Composition I & II, Public Speaking, and College Algebra during your first 48 hours of College work. The General Education course work may be different for each degree. Please see individual program for specific requirements.

What do you mean by Teacher Education?
Every education major will be involved in a two year professional education program. This is a continuation of your degree at the Junior & Senior level. During this time, you will be enrolled in core courses which include extensive field experiences. Graduates of this program will demonstrate proficiency in the functions of classroom teaching and in interpersonal skills with a wide range of individuals.

What are the requirements for admittance into the Teacher Education Program?
Admission to Teacher Education is required for enrollment in the professional education courses: Cores I, II and III. A student must submit the following Teacher Education Packets to Education Support Services, room 107 Corbin Education Center. Please call (316) 978-3300 for more information.

If I am a transfer student with a Associates Degree, am I ready to enter the Teacher Education program?
Not necessarily. If you are transferring in from an accredited Kansas college, perhaps the general education course work is complete; however, you must fulfill all Teacher Education entrance requirements in order to take courses within the Teacher Education program.

Do I need to take the Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST)?
The PPST is just one of the four standardized testing choices for admission into Teacher Education. Please link to the Teacher Education Packet (above) for more information.

What other tests will I need to take before I can be licensed to teach?
Kansas Department of Education requires all education students to take a content test in the specific area of concentration as well as a PLT (Principles of Learning & Teaching). I understand that I must file an application for degree card before I can graduate. When do I do this?
You must file an application online, through your WSU portal, no later than two semesters before your expected graduation date.
