Applied Learning Information
Students pursuing both undergraduate and graduate degrees in sport management are required to complete applied learning requirement as one of the culminating learning experiences in their programs of study. Applied learning provides students with the opportunity to utilize knowledge gained through their classes, to enhance their portfolios, network with sport managers, and to take an important step in establishing themselves as practicing sport managers.
Are You Ready For Your Applied Learning?
Is it time for you to enroll in your practicum or internship? Follow these steps to make sure you are on the right track:
- First - Meet with your advisor to verify enrollment into the practicum or internship.
- Second - Meet with your faculty supervisor to discuss plan and complete forms.
- Third - Find a practicum or internship site and do the second half of the paperwork with your supervisor.
- Fourth - Submit forms to faculty supervisor and if they approve then you can enroll yourself.
Internship Eligibility
Undergraduate sport management students who have obtained senior status (90 credit hours or more), completed SMGT 446: Pre-Internship Seminar with a B or better, and possess at least a 2.0 GPA are eligible for enrollment in SMGT 447A. Enrollment in the internship is by permission of the instructor only.
Graduate students must have completed credit hours with an approved plan of study and a 3.0 GPA or better to be eligible for enrollment as an intern. Enrollment in the internship is by permission of the instructor only.
Students must consult with their assigned faculty advisor and must submit all required advanced paperwork prior to beginning an applied learning class/assignment. Students who do not adhere to stated class policies and procedures will not receive passing grades.
SMGT 210 requires weekly work/volunteer/participation logs from the student totaling at least 160 hours within a 16-week semester. Additionally, the student’s on-site supervisor will need to complete a final evaluation.
In order to start the Practicum, a student should:
1) meet with their academic advisor
2) enroll in SMGT 210: Practicum
3) contact the faculty supervisor to complete the required advanced paperwork (210 Approval Form and Affiliation Agreement).
Faculty advisors are assigned based upon a student’s last name. The faculty advisors are as follows:
1) Last names beginning with letters A- M: Dr. Jeffrey Noble (Jeffrey.noble@wichita.edu)
2) Last names beginning with letters N- Z: Dr. Wonyoung Kim (wonyoung.kim@wichita.edu)

SMGT 447A requires weekly work/volunteer/participation logs from the student totaling at least 640 hours within a 16-week semester. Additionally, the student’s on-site supervisor will need to complete both a midpoint and final evaluation. Students also complete a comprehensive internship reflection paper.
In order to start the Internship, a student should:
1) meet with their academic advisor
2) enroll in SMGT 447A: Internship
3) contact the faculty supervisor to complete the required advanced paperwork (447 Approval form and Affiliation Agreement).
