Advance Directive Grant: This project combines an educational intervention with an exploration of the barriers and incentives to completing advance directives: e.g., living wills and durable power of attorney for health care decisions. The educational intervention is geared toward couples who are healthy and is being implemented in religious settings where people have a sense of safety in discussing these issues. The research is intended to identify the psychological motivations and barriers associated with people completing advance directives. Positive motivations include wanting to reduce decision making burden on family members, and barriers include discomfort with discussing mortality. Couple's decision making processes are a focus of the research as well. The project is being implemented by a coalition of groups which included the departments of psychology and nursing at Wichita State University, Congregational Health Ministries (parish nursing) of Via Christi Health Systems, Interfaith Ministries of Wichita, and Kansas Health Ethics, Inc. The project is funded by the United Methodist Health Ministry Fund.
