In the Spotlight - Alumnus Zack Powell

Zack Powell graduated from WSU in 2009 with a BFA in Theatre Performance. After graudation, he recieved his MFA in Classical Theatre at Illinois State University.  Powell is a DC/Baltimore based actor and a Resident Company Member at Everyman Theater where he has starred in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Book Club Play, The Sound Inside, The Lion in Winter, Sense and Sensibility and The Skin of Our Teeth. Other regional credits include: The Shakespeare Theatre Co.: Red Velvet, Dunsinane; Alabama Shakespeare Festival: Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream; The Kennedy Center: Shear Madness (600+ performances!), Sylvain; The Cleveland Playhouse: Sherwood—The Adventures of Robin Hood; Round House Theatre: The Legend of Georgia McBride; Theater J: The Last Night of Ballyhoo; The American Shakespeare Center: King Lear, Twelfth Night, Henry VI pt 2 and Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson; Folger Theatre: Midsummer Night's Dream, Off-Square Theatre Co.: The Cherry Orchard, Godspell, Cabaret; The Utah Shakespeare Festival: Twelfth Night, Measure for Measure, King John, Henry IV Pt. 2, Sherlock Holmes: The Final Adventure, The Tempest, South Pacific and Taming of The Shrew; The Illinois Shakespeare Festival: Othello, As You Like It, Twelfth Night, Romeo and Juliet, The Winter’s Tale and Comedy of Errors. He recently closed Midsummer Night’s Dream (as Puck) at Everyman Theatre and shot a pilot for a new “Reading Rainbow” type show for young children. This fall, his first feature film, Tapawingo, is slated for a limited release—starring John Heder and Billy Zane among others. Upcoming productions for Zack include A Christmas Carol at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Wolf, and the wild two-person comedy The Mystery of Irma Vep at Everyman Theatre in the spring of 2025. Zack lives in a townhouse in Alexandria, VA with his husband Joe Smelser and his adorable Shih Tzu Wick.
