Citizen Status

Financial Aid Eligibility

Your citizenship status was not able to be verified when you submitted your financial aid application (FAFSA). You will need to submit documentation to the Office of Financial Aid to verify your eligibility for federal aid.

Checklist of Required Documents:

  • A legible copy of your original citizenship/immigration document
  • A legible copy of your government-issued photo ID (like a driver's license or state ID)
  • A signed affidavit (use the correct link below)
PLEASE NOTE: If the citizenship documentation you have is a non-expired permanent resident card like the example shown to the right, you are not a U.S. Citizen. You will need to make corrections to your FAFSA to update your citizenship status from “U.S. Citizen” to “Eligible NonCitizen” and add your 9-digit Alien Registration Number.

  • U.S. Passport (valid for at least 5 years – expired is okay)
  • U.S. Passport Card
  • Certificate of Citizenship
  • Certificate of Naturalization
  • Consular Report of Birth Abroad (Form FS240)
  • Certificate of Birth issued by a foreign service post (Form FS545)
  • Certification of Report of Birth (Form DS-1350)

Update the Social Security Administration's Citizenship Status

When you submitted your FAFSA, it used the Social Security Administration (SSA) database to verify U.S. Citizenship. The SSA has a status other than U.S. Citizen for you. We suggest you contact them to correct your citizenship status. To contact the SSA or locate a local office, please visit ssa.gov.
