Parent Line of Duty Status
Financial Aid Eligibility
You reported on your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) that your parent or guardian died in the line of duty while the parent or guardian was:
- Serving on active duty as a member of the Armed Forces on or after September 11, 2001 – OR –
- Serving as and performing the duties as a public safety officer (see the definition of a public safety officer below).
We want to express our sympathy to you and your family regarding the loss of your parent or guardian and recognize their service to protect others and our community.
For eligible students, maximum Pell will be awarded regardless of SAI. Other aid outside of this award will be based on calculated SAI.

If the requirements listed below meet the circumstance, complete the following form and attach proof of eligibility (accepted documents listed on form).
If the requirements listed below do not meet the circumstance, correct your FAFSA by answering “No” to the line of duty question.
Eligibility Requirements
Parent or Guardian died in the line of duty while the parent or guardian was:
- Serving on active duty as a member of the Armed Forces on or after September 11, 2001; or
- Serving as and performing the duties as a public safety officer (see the definition of a public safety officer below).
In addition, a student must be less than 33 years of age as of January 1 of the award year for which the applicant is applying. Students who meet these qualifications are eligible to receive the maximum Pell Grant award for the award year.
For purposes of the Line of Duty application, a public safety officer is:
- Law enforcement officer, firefighter, or chaplain;
- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) employee;
- Emergency management or civil defense agency employee;
- Member of a rescue squad or ambulance crew;
- Others as defined in the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968
