Bernie Smith
accountant II, Office of Research Administration
Since 1992, Bernie Smith worked the books and balanced the tables for Wichita State
University. As an accountant for WSU, he landed his first position in funding in the
Office of Financial Operations.
His second position with the university had him working in accounts payable and accounts
receivable in the Office of Research Administration.
Smith enjoyed his work and the people he worked with.
“Some were people with the same problems. Others were people I could laugh with,”
said Smith.
For several years he was the Bank of America administrator on campus.
“I was able to set people up to look at daily transactions from Bank of America coming
in,” said Smith.
Smith accepted this role on top of his everyday work responsibilities.
“He is very dedicated to his work and a great person to work with,” said Amy Delgado,
accountant for research administration. “He is very easy-going, friendly and I’m never
afraid to ask him a question.”
“He is always there to be a part of the team, and he will be missed,” she said.
In retirement, Smith plans to escape the daily grind of accounting. He wants to chase
grandchildren, exercise more, work on his honey-do list, learn more about cooking
and play poker.
