Melissa Calloway
administrative assistant, Center for Urban Studies, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
For the past 13 years, Melissa Calloway has served Wichita State University as an
administrative assistant for the Center for Urban Studies.
Calloway’s main responsibility was to offer good customer service, and help with
the development of specialized certification trainings organized by the center for
city clerks and financial officers from all around Kansas. Her role was to keep track
of the participants’ online registrations, fees, packets, badges and notebooks, and
also be responsible for catering and inventory.
What made her job so enjoyable, she said, was “being able to serve others and being
able to help in any way that I could, and learn from those who were there longer than
I was.”
She remembers when she first started at the center and how welcoming and supportive
her supervisor was.
“I had the best supervisor anyone could ever ask for because she was so observant
and caring of the staff under her,” she said.
Calloway’s biggest accomplishments included receiving an Administrative Professional
Certificate from the Center for Management Development and being able to establish
relationships with those she had served.
“That has made my job so fulfilling; I am very blessed to know all who have crossed
my path,” she said.
In retirement, Calloway plans on going into full-time ministry with her church, as
well as spending more time with her family.
