Purpose
To promote responsible operation of university vehicles and combustion‑powered equipment
by reducing unnecessary fuel consumption and minimizing air emissions.
Policy Statement
- University vehicle operators may not idle engines for more than five consecutive minutes at a destination.
- Operators of off‑road vehicles and combustion‑powered equipment must follow the same five‑minute limit.
- Vehicles and equipment must never be left idling while unattended.
- Departments should limit the number of vehicles brought to job sites and ensure vehicles are not carrying unnecessary weight.
Implementation
This policy will be incorporated into the Facilities Services Handbook and communicated
to all applicable Facilities Services personnel. While the expectations outlined in
this policy apply to the entire University community, Facilities Services will not
issue direct outreach to individual departments or units regarding these requirements.
