Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure the safe and responsible use of Wichita State University grounds and water features. This policy prohibits swimming or fishing in any University-owned or managed body of water and restricts vehicle access on University lawns. These measures protect individuals from safety hazards, prevent property damage, and maintain the aesthetic and ecological integrity of campus landscapes.
Policy Statement
Wichita State University is committed to maintaining a safe environment and preserving the condition of its campus grounds. To support these goals, the following requirements apply:
- Prohibition on Swimming and Fishing
- Swimming, wading, or fishing in any University-owned or University-managed pond, lake, stormwater basin, fountain, or decorative water feature is strictly prohibited.
- These water bodies are not designed, treated, or maintained for recreational use and may present health, safety, and environmental risks.
- Restrictions on Driving Vehicles on Grass
- Motor vehicles, utility vehicles, golf carts, and other wheeled equipment are prohibited from driving or parking on University lawns, turf areas, or other landscaped green spaces.
- Exception: This restriction does not apply to Facilities Services Landscape Team vehicles, or other authorized service vehicles performing approved operational duties.
- Unauthorized vehicle use on turf causes soil compaction, irrigation damage, and landscape deterioration.
All students, employees, contractors, and visitors must comply with this policy at all times. Departments are responsible for ensuring that staff, vendors, and volunteers follow these requirements.
Implementation
The University Facilities Team will implement and enforce this policy through the following actions:
- Signage and Communication
- Install and maintain signage at appropriate locations indicating “No Swimming,” “No Fishing.”
- Communicate restrictions to event organizers, contractors, and University departments during planning and permitting processes.
- Monitoring and Reporting
- Facilities personnel will monitor water features and landscaped areas during routine operations.
- Violations should be reported to Facilities Services or University Police for follow-up action.
- Repeated departmental or contractor violations may result in revocation of campus access privileges or financial charges for damages.
- Damage Assessment and Recovery
- The Facilities Team will assess any damage caused by unauthorized vehicle use or improper activity in restricted areas.
- Departments, individuals, or contractors responsible for damage may be charged for labor, materials, and restoration costs.
- Coordination with University Police
- The University Police Department may assist with enforcement where safety concerns or persistent violations occur.
