Greek Glossary

Check out this information about some specific terms involved with Fraternity and Sorority Life!
Word Definition
Active An initiated member of a fraternity or sorority chapter.
Advisor An alumni member or mentor for the chapter who offers support, advice and advocates for the Executive Board of the chapter and the general members.
Any initiated member (s) of a sorority or fraternity who graduated or left college in good standing.
Call A yell or chant used to identify and greet brothers and sisters.  This is typically used by members of our Multicultural Greek Council.
Chapter A group of officially chartered and recognized collegians at a given college or university.
Continuous Open Bidding (COB) Informal membership recruitment process when bids may be extended and accepted during the school year other than during formal recruitment for the Panhellenic Council.
Expansion/Extension The process to gain a new chapter into the Fraternity and Sorority Community.
Formal Recruitment A total of four days in August where women are able to join a Panhellenic Sorority by meeting all Panhellenic chapters.
Initiation or Crossing The formal ceremony where new members receive lifelong membership privileges in their chosen chapters.
Interfraternity Council (IFC) The campus governing body for social fraternities, including Delta Upsilon, FarmHouse, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Phi Epsilon.
Interest Group A group of individuals on campus who are in the process of expanding into a Greek-letter organization.
Legacy A sibling, child, or grandchild of an initiated member of a Greek-letter organization.
Line Used by the Multicultural Greek Council, a line is referred to the people who joined the same semester as you joined.
Membership Intake The period of training and/or time before initiation or crossing into an organization within the Multicultural Greek Council.
Multicultural Greek Council (MGC)

The governing body over social, cultural-based fraternities and sororities, including Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Chi Sigma Tau National Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Kappa Delta Chi Sorority, Inc., Lambda Pi Upsilon Sorority,  Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Psi Zeta Sorority, Inc. and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

New or Associate Member An uninitiated potential member of a fraternity or sorority.
Panhellenic Council (PC) The campus governing body for all social sororities, including Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, Delta Delta Delta, Gamma Phi Beta and Kappa Kappa Gamma.
Philanthropy A charitable cause or organization that is sponsored by a Greek-letter organization.
Potential New Member (PNM) Any student who is an undergraduate student at Wichita State who is not currently affiliated with a Greek-letter organization.
Probate or New Member Presentation The introduction of new members of a chapter within the Multicultural Greek Council to their friends, family and the community.
Rituals Ceremonies and celebrations that are conducted by every chapter for members of their organization only.
Stepping Dating back to slaves in Africa, stepping is rhythmic,sharp movements done in a group setting involving the stomping of feet.  Adopted by historically black fraternities and sororities in the early 1900s and later adopted by culturally-based fraternities and sororities.  Our Multicultural Greek Council honors their roots by hosting events throughout the year involving stepping.

Dating back to slaves walking in lines with each other, strolling is coordinated movements done in a line by members of individual chapters within the Multicultural Greek Council to show unity and pride for their organization.

Rule: Don't EVER break a strolling line, as this is often seen as a sign of disrespect to a MGC organization.
