WICHITA, Kan. –Momentum is in the Lady Shocker's hands after successfully defending the Hoosier Classic title held at Western Bowl in Indianapolis, Indiana this past weekend. This year’s Hoosier Classic attracted a hefty field of 78 men's teams and 67 women's teams.
Each team qualified on two demanding lane conditions, bowling 9 team games. After scores were tallied the Lady Shockers found themselves in first place waiting the best two-out-of-three baker match play bracket, aside from the championship match which was best four-out-of-seven.
Number 8 seed Ashford University fell to the Shockers with scores of 159 to 222, 204 to 187, and 197-169. Shortly after, the women faced number 5 seed Grandview University, who were defeated in two games with scores of 187 to 157 and 210 to 173.
Kansas natives Newman University awaited the Shockers for the championship best four-out-of-seven match. The Shockers soon found themselves down 0-2 before rallying back to tie the match with scores of 170 to 177, 189 to 208, 199 to 175, and 221 to 190.
The challenging match play oil condition proved difficult as they won their fifth game 155 to 131. Newman University fought back, tying the match with a 214 to 217 victory.
This match went to the tenth frame, leaving the match in Newman University's hands. A failed spare conversion on the last ball left the final game score tied at 162 to 162. Tournament rules gave tied matches to the higher total pin fall, in this case, the Lady Shockers.
"These ladies have come a long way since their first tournament," Assistant Coach Mark Lewis said. "Our focus is now set on sectionals. We can't wait to get back to work."
Two players earned individual accolades from the qualifying portion of the event. Freshman Sydney Brummet (Fort Wayne, Ind.) earned the top position, averaging 217 for 9 games. Sophomore Daria Kovalova (Moscow, Russia) qualified fourth in the individual standings, averaging 204 for 9 games.
The Shocker men struggled through the qualifying portion of the tournament, finishing 17th place out of 78 teams.
Sectional assignments will be released Wednesday, February 18th in the afternoon.
