Half-way Point: The Jayhawk Classic marks the half-way point for first semester for the selected team. This is also the last tournament the developmental squad will compete in.
Location: For the first time this season, the men and women will bowl in the same house. Royal Crest Lanes in Lawrence, Kan. will serve as the host of the Jayhawk Classic.
Jayhawk History: The Shocker men will look to break the streak of four straight third place finishes
since 2011. In 2011 and 2012 the Lady Shox finished third as well. They won the event
in 2013 and finished second last year.
Schedule: Bowling begins at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday with six traditional team games. 16 baker
games start at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday. After qualifying, the top eight varsity men’s
and women’s teams and the top four JV men’s and women’s teams are seeded into a single
elimination bracket. Rounds one and two are best two-of-three and the finals are best
three-of-five. The bracket begins at 2:00 p.m.
How to keep up: Follow the Shockers scores on their Facebook (/shockerbowling) and Twitter (@shockerbowling)
for periodic score updates when they are available!
Travelers: Two men’s teams and two women’s teams are making the trek to Lawrence this weekend.
Stephen Cowland, Tyler Cruz, Mitch Hupé, Thomas Peters, Zach Rhoades and Jack Stewart
make up the varsity men’s team. In their final event of the season, Jonathan Bowman,
Josh Brown, Jason Ciszewski, Shawn Curtis and Colton Ruscetti will compete in the
JV men’s division. Sydney Brummett, Fania Cobo, Hollyann Johansen, Dasha Kovalova,
Kristie López and Caitlin Tam will compete in the women’s varsity division. Sierra
Kanemoto, Rachel Moe, Kayla Ovesny, Shelby Snyder and Brooke Woodard make up the JV
women’s team.
Support the Shockers: There is NO entry fee into the event this weekend. Come cheer on the Shox for free!
Shox around the World: Junior Laura Plazas is not traveling with the women’s team this weekend. She flew
out to Colombia earlier in the week to compete in the Colombian National Games! Senior
AJ Chapman is also not with the men this weekend as he is one of 19 current and former
Shockers competing at the men’s U.S. Open in Garland, Tex.
Shocker Speak: Coaches Mark Lewis and Gordon Vadakin
How do you feel about the teams’ performance so far?
ML: It’s early in the season and we are still getting to know each other. The girls are
working every day to get better. I’m pretty pleased with what I’ve seen so far. As
a team, they are ahead of where they were last year at this time.
GV: I’m fairly satisfied with how we’ve done so far. There is a lot of improvement in
front of us but we have had a solid start to the season.
What do you look forward to the most each season?
ML: I look forward to watching the girls be the closest and tightest team they can be.
With a core group of returners, these girls have a chance to be the closest and tightest
team we have ever had.
GV: I look forward to watching the team grow into a cohesive unit.
