CSD Outstanding Alumni Award
The CSD Outstanding Alumni Award is given annually to our alumni who have shown outstanding achievement in the professions of speech-language pathology and audiology. Nomination letters should detail the nominee's qualifications for the award and include their curriculum vita. Additional letters of support are optional, but appreciated. Submit nominations to csd@wichita.edu by October 1.

2013: Rosalind Scudder, PhD
Dr. Rosalind (Ro) Scudder is a professor in the Department of Communication Sciences
and Disorders at Wichita State University (WSU). She holds a BA (1964), MA (1972),
and PhD (1978) in Speech-Language Pathology, all from her alma mater, WSU.
She has been on the faculty at WSU since 1972, serving administratively at various
times as a clinical supervisor, clinic director, chair, and graduate coordinator in
the CSD program. In 1999, Dr. Scudder was appointed the Founding Director for the
WSU Center for Teaching and Research Excellence, where she served part time until
2002. In 2007, Dr. Scudder was appointed as the Director of a newly formed Leadership
Academy for faculty and staff in the College of Health Professions, where she has
served part time until Spring 2013. In addition, she has served as President of the
Kansas Speech-Language-Hearing Association (KSHA) and President of the Council of
Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD). She was named
a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) in 1990 in recognition
of her outstanding contributions to the discipline of communication sciences and disorders.
Dr. Scudder’s research interests are in the areas of child language disorders and
the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL). Most recently, she has taught CSD
PhD students and published numerous articles regarding various aspects of university
teaching. In 2006, Dr. Scudder received the ASHA Recognition for Contributions to
Higher Education.
Continuing Education Event
Continuing education clock hours are pending approval for Kansas licensed audiologists
and speech-language pathologists by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment.

Telling Our Stories: Keeping CSD History Alive, Dr. Ro Scudder

This presentation will cover the rich history of the professions as well as the role
the CSD Department has played in the changes, both locally, state-wide, and nationally.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this presentation participants will be able to:
1. Describe the early history of Communication Sciences and Disorders and identify
at least 3 significant changes that have occurred over the last 40-50 years.
2. Identify at least 3 early speech-language pathology and audiology assessment and
remediation strategies used in the past and compare/contrast them with current strategies
used in the present day practice.
3. Describe at least 2 potential directions for the future of speech-language pathology/audiology
assessment and remediation.

Adaptive Leadership for Speech-Language Pathologists, Audiologists, other Allied Health
Professionals and Educators, Dr. Ro Scudder
2.0 clock hours (Cost: $30)
Topics will include the core tenet of adaptive leadership that “anyone can exercise
leadership, anywhere, anytime". She will then propose ways for introducing these leadership
principles in the practice of speech-language pathology, audiology, other Allied Health
professionals and educators.
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this presentation participants will be able to:
1. Describe adaptive leadership and identify at least 2 ways to practice it in their
professional settings.
2. Identify the four competencies of adaptive leadership and ways to apply them as
they work with children and adults who have speech-language/audiology disorders.
3. Determine at least 3 examples of ways to introduce the concepts of adaptive leadership
to co-workers in speech-language pathology, audiology, other Allied Health professionals
and educators.
LUNCH on your own, 11:00 a.m - 1:00 p.m.

Who's Screening for Autism Spectrum Disorders? The Important Role Allied Healthcare
and Education Professionals Play in Early Detection and Intervention, Dr. Trisha Self
3.0 clock hours (Cost: $50)
Discount of $5 if attending both Saturday sessions (Cost: $75).
This workshop will discuss the importance of early detection and intervention for
children presenting with characteristics of ASD. Screening, assessment, and referral
strategies will be presented through case-based, hands-on activities.
Learning Objectives
As a result of this workshop, the participants will be able to:
1. Discuss the significance of early screening for children presenting with symptoms
of autism spectrum disorders.
2. Determine allied healthcare and education professionals’ role in screening for
ASD.
3. Identify ASD-specific screening tools.
4. Describe an interdisciplinary team approach used to screen, assess, and refer
for children presenting with characteristics of ASD.

Parking for Friday event: 1845 Fairmount, Room 200 Ahlberg Hall (AH)
- Pull in the Harvard St. entrance, south side of WSU on 17th St. At the stop sign, directly in front of AH, you may take a left or right onto Perimeter Road- your choice.
- You may park in any student lots (green labeled). Lot 9E on the right will have stalls sectioned off for the event.
- You may enter at the front (stairs) or side (ramp) entrances of AH. Room 200 AH is on the main floor in the north hallway (past the elevators).
Parking for Saturday event: Hughes Metropolitan Complex (MX), 29th & Oliver, 180 MX
- You may park in any of the lots surrounding the MX; the closest door to the event room is on the south side- Entrance N.
- Signs directing you towards 180 MX will be posted throughout the building and at entrances.
