Academic Advising

Advising is much more than just building a schedule; it's an ongoing partnership between the student, advisors and advising staff to promote your success and help you graduate in a timely manner. Students have several ways of initiating contact with an academic advisor, including email, phone and personal contact. Academic advisors are available to meet with the student within a reasonable time frame after the student's request, and appointment time(s) will be allotted to carry out the activities needed.

Center for Excellence in Oral Communication

Oral communication competency is a much sought after, crucial, and admired skill in educated persons. Oral communication skills are usually central to a person’s success in most, if not all, fields. To that end, Wichita State University (WSU) requires virtually all students to successfully complete Communication 111-Public Speaking as part of their General Education Program. The Center for Excellence in Oral Communication (Center) was created in 2016 to provide additional assistance to students beyond what is available in the classroom or from their instructor during office hours. Students from throughout WSU are also invited to use the Center as needs dictate. Services are available to anyone on campus.

Supplemental Instruction (SI)

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an international program developed to assist students with learning material in traditionally difficult classes. It is a series of weekly review sessions for students taking certain courses. SI sessions are led by a student who has previously succeeded in the course and focus on collaborative and active learning. Research has proven that students who participate in SI earn about half a letter grade better than those who do not. Attendance at sessions is voluntary and completely free. For the student, it is a chance to get together with other students in the class to compare notes, discuss important concepts, develop strategies for studying, and test yourself before the professor does. The program’s focus on collaborative learning makes sessions fun and provides another connection to campus to aid in academic success.
